4-H barn awards given out Monday The Seneca Stingers and Green Valley 4-H clubs are the 2015 recipients of the Shawano County Fair barn awards. The awards were given out Monday at the coliseum. The awards are given out each year to the youth organizations that best keep the fairgrounds clean and inform non-farm visitors at the fair about their animals and what their families do for a living.
Local kids jam at the fair
The stage at the Shawano County Fair’s junior fair building started out as a platform for animals, but by the time the weekend rolled around, it was taken over by party animals. U B the Band gave dozens of local children the opportunity to take the stage to be lead singers, guitarists and drummers to a number of popular songs.
12 weeks after foot surgery, recovery continues
I got rid of the boot, sort of. When I went to the doctor last week, I could imagine myself throwing the boot out the door if I got permission to do so. At the very least, I was not going to wear that cumbersome, uncomfortable thing to bed with me any longer, but the reality turned out to be very different. The doctor shared the welcome news that I could switch to wearing a shoe now.
‘Devil’ comes down to Shawano this fall
It’s September, and I haven’t even done all the things I was going to do in August — or July, for that matter. We’re going with friends to visit mutual friends at their summer place in Minnesota next week. This mini trip could not be worked into all three couples’ calendars before now because of various appointments and other commitments.
Cell phone woes
My cell phone is with me pretty much at all times, except when I sleep. The other day, I was chopping hay and, of course, had my cell right next to me in a little carrier of sorts. This day, for one reason or another, I had not slipped it into the same compartment that I always put it into. My husband and I had just exchanged wagons.

FOOTBALL Stoss rumbles for 140 yards in BHS win Bonduel senior running back Blake Stoss took 22 carries for 140 yards and a touchdown as the Bears (3-0, 1-0 Central Wisconsin Conference-8) remained perfect on the season with a 23-14 win at Manawa. Bonduel quarterback Trevor Pedersen completed seven of his 12 attempts for 119 yards and two touchdowns and an interception. Final night of racing will determine track champions
It all comes down to this. The blood, the sweat, the gear lube in the hair. The final night of racing at the historic half-mile Shawano Speedway. Five track champions will be crowned Saturday. Ron Berna enters the final night of racing with a 16-point advantage in the Late Model division over Doug Blashe.
Packers’ Guion, Jones await substance abuse suspensions
Packers defensive lineman Letroy Guion plans to stay in Green Bay during his three-game suspension to work out and get ready for the rest of the season. The NFL announced the suspension last week, saying the eight-year pro violated the league’s policy of substance abuse.

The Pella Eagles 4-H Club began in 1998 with 12 members, including the sons of current co-leaders Lynn Tober-Steinke and Julie Bishop. The boys were old enough to be Cloverbuds. Now the Pella Eagles have more than 40 members who are very active in their club and in their community. “Our club motto is ‘Building future leaders,’” Tober-Steinke said.
Volunteer Profile
Gloria Bonnin and her daughter, April VanGheem, have been taking care of the antiques at the Shawano County Fair for five years. They have been entering their antiques at the fair for 18 years and for several year have gone to Gold Rush Days in Minnesota, a large four-day antique fest. Gloria Bonnin was born in the town of Hartland and graduated from Bonduel High School.
