Fair’s 1st car show off to fast start
Expectations were low for the first classic car show at the Shawano County Fair, but there were already signs Friday that the event could find its niche in the fair’s annual lineup. Early Friday afternoon, 37 cars were displayed in the air-conditioned Crawford Center in the southeast corner of the fairgrounds.

A new generation of riders saddles up
Friday was moving day for the Shawano County 4-H Horse Group. The young equine enthusiasts began arriving around 9 a.m. to board their horses in their temporary home for a weekend’s worth of shows and competitions. “There’s a lot of excitement with the kids today,” said John Arens, a member of the Shawano County Fair Board who has been actively involved with the 4-H Horse Key Committee for nearly 10 years.

Most ACT scores up in Shawano County
Most area school districts recorded improved ACT scores among students taking the test in the 2014-15 school year. According to results released by the state, the Marion and Bonduel school districts registered highest in the county, both with an average composite score of 22.9. State’s Deer Management Assistance Program continues to grow
Following a successful launch of Wisconsin’s Deer Management Assistance Program in 2014, Wisconsin landowners and land managers have continued to work closely with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to manage their properties for healthy deer and habitat. In DMAP’s first year, the department accepted 114 applications and worked with nearly 300 landowners.

Event offers answers to key retirement questions
Thrivent Financial is hosting a free educational program to help area residents learn how to retire with confidence. The program will be held from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Sept. 16 at Doc’s Timeline Saloon & BBQ, W2709 State Highway 29, Bonduel. The program will be presented by Dean Kaczorowski, Jeanne Kaczorowski and Jacqueline Szczepanski. “Many people have serious questions about their retirement strategies,” Dean Kaczorowski said.

Frank W. Schutt Jr.
Frank W. “Junior” Schutt Jr., 86, of Shawano, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2015, in Shawano. Frank was born in Shawano on March 27, 1929, to the late Frank W. and Amanda (Degener) Schutt Sr. He served our country in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953. On June 18, 1955, Frank was united in marriage to Delores E. Drews at St. Martin’s in the town of Belle Plaine. Delores preceded him in death on Aug. 17, 2011.

Caroline Colorama plans in place
The 27th annual Caroline Lions Colorama Fall Trail Ride will be held from Oct. 1-4. Billed as Wisconsin’s largest trail ride, the event is expected to attract about 1,300 horses and riders. Activities begin on Thursday with free music by The Rodeo Deville, featuring Al Jahnke, from 7:30-11:30 p.m. Grand Union will provide the music beginning at 8:30 p.m. Friday. On Saturday, breakfast will be served from 7-10 a.m.
