Jim Lukas, Gayle Tonn Lukas to lead Dairyfest parade

Jim Lukas and Gayle Tonn Lukas will serve as the parade marshals for the Lena Lions Dairyfest parade at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, on Main Street in Lena. Jim and Gayle were married in 1988. Their family consists of one son, two daughters and four grandchildren. Jim was born in Gilman and raised on a farm near Thorp. His parents are Harriet and Pete Lukas.
Lena Dairyfest features free entertainment
Lena Dairyfest will be held on Saturday, Sept. 12, at the St. Anne’s Parish grounds in Lena. The day will begin with the annual 5K Stampede Run-Walk. Registration will start at 6 a.m., and the contest begins at 8 a.m. at Lena School. For information, call Chad Misco at 920-373-2319. A parade will start at 10:30 a.m. at the west end of Lena and proceed down Main Street to the St. Anne’s Parish grounds. Entrants should line up by 10 a.m.
Claflin teaches at agriscience institute
Kellie Claflin, agriscience educator at Gillett High School, recently co-taught an eight-day professional development institute at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. Homecoming plans in place
Homecoming week will be celebrated Sept. 13-19 at Oconto Falls High School. The celebration starts Sunday when students decorate the school hallways and paint windows at local businesses. Dress-up days will be Toga Day, Tacky Tourist Day, Tie Dye Day, Throwback Thursday and School Spirit Day. A bonfire will be held Sept.
Suring falls in three close matches
Going into its final match, the Suring High School volleyball team, which was 2-6 at the time, had no idea how big of an impact a victory could have on the Bonduel Invitational on Sept. 1. After losing to Laona-Wabeno, Waupaca and Bonduel, the Eagles were set to face Omro in the fourth match of the day. Omro sat in first place, needing a win to stay ahead of the host Bears for the championship title.
Panthers’ late push not enough to score
The Oconto Falls offense could never get going. However, the Freedom offense seemingly couldn’t be stopped. Freedom scored touchdowns on its first six drives and led 42-0 at halftime of Friday’s high school football game in Freedom.
Cross-country runners show improvement in 2nd meet
One week after an early-season four-team meet, it was time for some stiff competition for the Oconto Falls High School cross-country team. The Panthers tested themselves against some of northeast Wisconsin’s top teams, and the Oconto Falls runners held their own in hot and humid conditions at the annual Freedom Invitational on Friday.

GIRLS GOLF Panthers second at Golden Sands Oconto Falls took to Golden Sands Golf Course in Cecil on Sept. 1 and finished in a tie for second place, 28 strokes behind first-place Marinette. Brittany Russell and Bridget Gorman let the scoring for Oconto Falls, both shooting 47s. Brianna LeFebre followed in third with a 48, and Kalie Elkins finished out the scoring with a 55. Marinette’s Kayla Thielen was the medalist of the meet. She shot a 37.

Boy donates auction price to charity A boy raised nearly $7,000 for charity at the Shawano County Fair by agreeing to donate proceeds from his pig auction to groups fighting cancer. Alec Karcz, 10, who has two grandparents battling cancer, announced that whatever his pig “Muffin” drew at Friday’s auction would be donated in honor of his grandparents.
