GIRLS VOLLEYBALL Bonduel drops first conference match Bonduel (4-6, 0-1 Central Wisconsin Conference-8) lost its first conference match of the season Tuesday at Amherst 18-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-23. Senior setter Miranda Schmidt had 21 assists for Bonduel. Taylor Weier and Hayley Pues each added 13 kills.

Chris Hidde controlled the majority of Shawano Speedway’s annual 150-lap Impact Survival Series Enduro on Friday until a crash ended his night, allowing Scott Blanke to take the lead for the remaining portion of the race. Fifty-eight competitors took to the 3/8-mile track. Hidde jumped out to the lead on lap one from his middle-front row starting position and quickly set a fast pace, beginning to put cars laps down as Dylan Pingel and Scott Blank

The final races of the season Saturday night made lasting memories for drivers earning victories and feature titles at Shawano Speedway. Ron Berna wrap up his seventh Late Model track title to tie him with Terry Anvelink and MJ McBride for the most Late Model titles. It was also his 10th title overall at Shawano. Jerry Wilinski won his second IMCA Modified title. Travis VanStraten won the IMCA Stock Car title for the second year in a row.

Shawano Community High School senior Austin Lhotka led the Hawks cross-country team to a third-place finish at the Wittenberg-Birnamwood Invitational with a time of 17:44 Tuesday. Following him were junior Andrew Cardish and sophomore Chase Lhotka with times of 18:24 and 18:44, respectively.

A back-and-forth battle early in the second game gave the Menominee Indian High School girls volleyball team some hope against visiting Rosholt. Arlene Ruechel, 90, of Pulaski, passed away on Sept. 7, 2015, in Green Bay with her husband and family by her side. Arlene was born on Dec. 9, 1924, to the late Ben and Gertrude (Zuleger) Moes in Appleton. On July 19, 1945, Arlene was united in marriage to Raymond Ruechel at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cicero. The couple lived and farmed together for 70 years.

Kay Francine (Viitanen) Capion, 65, of Shawano, died on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015, in Appleton. Kay was born on Nov. 19, 1949, to the late Roy and Violet (Wendt) Viitanen in Chicago. When she was 5, her family moved to Wisconsin, where she was raised in Clintonville. She graduated in 1968 from Clintonville High School. On Sept. 20, 1969, she was united in marriage to Clayton Balke at St. Martin Lutheran Church.

Wayne William “Swede” Waukau, 47, of Keshena, died on Sunday, Sept. 6, 2015, in Shawano. Swede was born in Oshkosh on Feb. 10, 1968, to the late Wayne R. and Karen (Cox) Waukau. He was employed at Menominee Enterprises for most of his working career. On Dec. 10, 1988, he was united in marriage to Robin Gauthier at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Neopit. Wayne helped his Uncle Bill with the annual Sturgeon Feast on the Menominee Reservation.

Joyous S. Bowen, 91, of the town of Wescott, died peacefully at home on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2015, with her family by her side. Born on Feb. 21, 1924, in Green Bay, she was the daughter of Erwin Lewis Rohloff and Lenora Sophie (Nora) Raddant Rohloff. On Dec. 20, 1952, Joyous married Carl W. Bowen in Green Bay. She attended Fort Howard Elementary School and graduated from West High School in 1942.
