The problem of homelessness was not on the agenda for the May 14 Shawano Common Council meeting, but it received a fair amount of attention and ended with a plan to look into the issue. There is a homeless shelter that is run through Shawano Area Matthew 25, but it’s only open from Nov.

Town of Richmond officials agreed May 12 on a new procedure to deal with stray dogs in the community. The change comes after a town supervisor shot and killed two stray dogs last month, albeit in accordance with town policy at the time. Town officials will now call the Shawano County Humane Society to assist the town’s constable with picking up stray dogs.

Shawano School Board member Tim Renard was elected president for the board May 12 after two rounds of voting. Renard replaces Mike Musolff as president, who said he could no longer perform the duties of president since being promoted to police chief for the city of Shawano. “I want to thank the community for allowing me to be president for the last few years,” Musolff said.

The open enrollment gap continues to widen in the Shawano School District, as more area students are attending schools in other districts compared with outside students coming to Shawano. The district received 17 new applications in a three-month open enrollment period ending April 30.

The Oconto Falls School Board voted May 12 to award Peters Concrete the contract for demolishing Washington Middle School later this year, but not before hearing one last wrinkle from the president of the Oconto Falls Historical Society. An Oconto man died May 16 in a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 41 north of the city. Oconto County Sheriff Todd Skarban said in a news release that the Emergency Dispatch Center received a call at 11:03 a.m.

The Oconto Falls City Council cleared the way May 13 for the Oconto County Farmers Market to relocate to Memorial Field starting this summer. After four summers next to Highland Plaza along Highland Drive, the weekly market will be staged at the former high school football field behind the new fire station. “In the future, we’d love to work with the city to make this a permanent home for us,” market organizer Sophie Ford told the council.
