Shawano School Board member Tim Renard was elected president for the board May 12 after two rounds of voting.
Renard replaces Mike Musolff as president, who said he could no longer perform the duties of president since being promoted to police chief for the city of Shawano.
“I want to thank the community for allowing me to be president for the last few years,” Musolff said. “With my other position, I’ve decided not to be president this year — not that that diminishes anything else for anybody else.”
That left the position wide open with three board members nominated. In addition to Renard, Bobbi Lemerond and Jeana Winslow were jockeying for the post.
Board member Karen Houston suggested that Winslow, given the amount of time she’s been on the board, would be the best choice for president.
“Although I appreciate all the gifts and talents of everyone on this board, I would like to nominate Jeana Winslow as the president because of her experience as a board member and her training and involvement,” Houston said.
The first round saw Renard and Winslow receive four votes each, with Lemerond being eliminated with just one vote. In the second round, Renard won with a 5-4 vote.
In between the two rounds of voting, Renard said: “I was looking for some white smoke,” making a reference to the recent election for the new pope at the Vatican.
Renard is in his first three-year term on the board. His seat, which represents the towns of Wescott and Washington, expires next year.
“I have some big shoes to fill with Mike, and I’m glad he’s hanging around with us,” Renard said. “I’m relatively unknown to some of the people here, but I’ve been in the district for three or four years now having moved up here from Milwaukee.”
Winslow wound up taking the vice president position by unanimous consent. Al Pyatskowit was named as the clerk, Winslow’s previous position, after Lemerond declined her nomination. Houston was named treasurer.
