Fire — A fire call at Qualheim’s True Value, 1345 E. Green Bay St., turned out to be a false alarm. Accident — A 42-year-old Cecil man was cited for inattentive driving after a two-vehicle accident at Green Bay and Lincoln streets.

The Shawano County Tribal Affairs Committee opted to take no action Tuesday on a request by one member to use $1,500 in Ho-Chunk gaming compact funds to fix stop signs. Instead, the request to find funding for the signs will go to the Highway and Finance departments. Supervisor Marion Wnek explained that there is a flashing stop sign at the intersection of County roads D and Q west of Bowler that recently stopped flashing.

The Shawano School Board Executive Committee is recommending that a vacant board seat created by Jim Heinz’s resignation be filled, even though the seat is up for election in six months. The committee agreed by consensus Monday to send out a notice seeking interested candidates who reside within the Shawano School District. The deadline for applicants is Oct. 18, and the applicants will make their case before the School Board on Oct.

Events on Friday include the annual homecoming parade, which begins at 6 p.m. Parade participants will line up at 5 p.m. at the parking lot across from Memorial Park. The semifinals of the powder-puff football tourney will begin at 7:15 p.m., with the championship game at 7:45 p.m. Fireworks are scheduled to begin about 8:15 p.m.

Coming off a two-game winning streak, the Menominee Indian High School football team took a step backward Saturday in a loss to Laona/Wabeno in Keshena. Menominee Indian (2-4, 1-2 Northern Lakes) lost to Laona/Wabeno (3-2, 3-1 Northern Lakes) 22-6. “We just came out flat,” Menominee Indian coach Chris Clache said.

Hawks downed in Seymour The Shawano Community High School volleyball team pushed Bay Conference foe Seymour to five sets before losing on Tuesday in Seymour. The Hawks (1-3 Bay) won the first game 25-23, lost the next two to Seymour (2-2 Bay) 25-16, 25-19. Shawano won the next game 25-21, but lost the tie-breaker 15-5. Peyton Going and Erika Dunnam led with eight kills each. Dunnam had three aces. Bella Gonzalez had six blocks and six kills.

The Shawano/Bonduel high school girls swim team edged Seymour 96-74 Tuesday at SCHS. Shawano/Bonduel took firsts in nine of 11 events, including two each by Ali Hanson and Clare Martell. Hanson took first in the 50-yard freestyle and led a 1-2-3 Hawks sweep in the 100 butterfly, with Emme Quandt taking second and Alyssa Anker placing third. “It’s a fun thing to see happen, the girls get really excited,” Shawano/Bonduel coach Sharon Hanson said.

That was the message Shawano Community High School boys soccer coach Bob Croschere had for his players Tuesday night ahead of a Bay Conference match against West De Pere. With a 2-1 victory, Shawano secured the No. 2 seed in the Bay Conference tournament, which begins Thursday. “They took that to heart,” Croschere said.
