Suring girls tops at conference track meet

Suring High School’s girls track team captured six victories — three by junior Az VanBellinger — en route to a first-place finish Friday at the Marinette & Oconto Conference meet at Peshtigo High School. Suring racked up 213.5 points, with Peshtigo (193) second and Florence/Niagara (62) third. Peshtigo (164) won the boys meet, with Suring (131.5) second and Crivitz (110.50) third. Panthers can’t catch Mariners at River Island
The Oconto Falls High School boys golf team took sixth among 11 schools at its invitational Thursday at River Island Golf Course. Marinette (328) won the tournament, with Bayport (333) taking second and Ashwaubenon (348) third. Oconto Falls was sixth with a 364.
Wolf goes the distance for Panthers at Bay meet
The Oconto Falls High School girls track team showed significant improvement at this year’s Bay Conference Championship at Marinette High School on Friday. A year after finishing last in the nine-team conference, the Panthers jumped to fifth this year.
Oconto Falls boys 7th at Bay Championship
Oconto Falls High School senior Mike Friedman had the Panthers’ best finish Saturday at the Bay Conference Championship at Marinette High School. Friedman finished second in the 1,600-meter run and added a fourth-place finish in the 800 for the Panthers, who finished seventh among nine teams. West De Pere won the meet with 158.5 points, 38 points ahead of second-place Seymour. Luxemburg-Casco was third (111).

Finnegan Lake club invites kids to fishing outing
The Finnegan Lake Walleye Club will sponsor a kids fishing day from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 6, at Finnegan Lake in Gillett. The event is open to kids ages 12 and under, and each participant should be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The event is held in conjunction with Wisconsin’s free fishing weekend.
River Island announces junior league sign-up
Registration has opened for the 2015 River Island Junior Golf League. The league will offer two options for area youth. “Flighted” members will golf in team and individual play. This option is open to those entering sixth grade in the fall, up to 19 years old. The other option is “Lessons” members, aimed at beginner golfers.

First-place finishes by Akeem Bates, Lauren Herzog and Taylor Kohls boosted the Gillett Secondary School boys and girls track teams to sixth-place finishes Friday at the Marinette & Oconto Conference meet at Peshtigo High School. SOFTBALL Gillett/Suring 10 STAA/Lena 0 Pitcher Willow Pecha struck out 11 hitters in six innings in the Hornets’ Marinette & Oconto Conference shutout Monday at STAA/Lena. Pecha allowed three hits and issued three walks. At the plate, she was 1 for 3 with a run driven in and two stolen bases. Greta Sleeter led the Hornets (8-7, 4-7 M&O) offensively, going 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs and a double.
