High School Highlights

BASEBALL Denmark 2 Shawano 1 Grant Wainio pitched all seven innings for Shawano (12-8, 7-6 Bay Conference), but the offense had just three hits in the road loss Tuesday. Wainio finished with seven strikeouts and allowed four hits. Tanner Umentum pitched the complete-game win for Denmark (19-2, 12-2 Bay). 3 new directors join SCAF board
The Shawano Area Community Foundation has added three new members to its board of directors: Todd Swedberg, Char Larsen and Curt Knoke. Swedberg is a graduate of Shawano High School. He continued his education at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he earned a degree in psychology, and Milwaukee Area Technical College, where he earned an associate degree in mortuary science.

County honors its latest ‘Living Treasures’
As part of Older Americans Month, the Shawano County Aging Unit honored five new “Living Treasures” Tuesday at the Fellman Center. Over the last 15 years, the program has acknowledged 85 county residents. Bill Cantwell, Tom Cotter, Nancy Goode, Mitzi Moesch and Sandy Staszak were added to the list Tuesday. “These seniors have given their time and talents throughout their life time,” said Lynnae Zahringer, director of the Aging Unit.

Cumberland to speak at Memorial Day program
All it took for Shawano School District Superintendent Gary Cumberland to accept an invitation to speak at the Memorial Day ceremony was a discussion with his son. Andrew Cumberland, 27, is a member of the Air National Guard and just returned from deployment in Japan. “I am quite honored to be speaking, because I never was in the military,” Gary Cumberland said. “But now I am excited to be a part of it.

Firm hired for SCMS design work
The Shawano School Board on Monday unanimously approved bringing back the Somerville architects to do remodeling design work for Shawano Community Middle School. The Green Bay firm was chosen out of three offers received in response to a request for proposals in the last month.

Meeting will outline Hwy. 22 work in Clintonville
The public is invited to an informational meeting Thursday about the state Highway 22 reconstruction project in Clintonville. The hourlong meeting will begin at 1 p.m. in the Community Center, 30 S. Main St. The purpose of the meeting is to provide information about planned improvements, contractor’s schedule and traffic changes during construction.

Russell Oscar Clauss
On Wednesday, May 13, 2015, Jesus called the soul of Russell Oscar Clauss into heaven at the age of 79. Russell died peacefully at his home in Mayer, Arizona, after fighting a courageous battle with cancer. “Bud” was born on Nov. 26, 1935, in Mattoon to Wilbert and Gena (Polluck) Clauss. He attended Shady Nook, a one-room schoolhouse and Mattoon High School. He married Shirley A. Maus at St. John Lutheran Church, Mattoon, on Dec. 5, 1953.
