Wolf goes the distance for Panthers at Bay meet

The Oconto Falls High School girls track team showed significant improvement at this year’s Bay Conference Championship at Marinette High School on Friday. A year after finishing last in the nine-team conference, the Panthers jumped to fifth this year. Bailey Wolf helped that point total with first-, second- and third-place finishes. West De Pere (143.5) won the meet, followed by Seymour (114) in second and Luxemburg-Casco (88) in third. Wolf was first in the 1,600-meter run at 5 minutes, 32.59 seconds. She also placed second, with a personal best, in the 800 (2:24.49) and third in the 3,200. (12:32.73). Sophomore Diane Moore was third in both hurdles events (100, 17.15; 300, 51.48). Junior Liza Leja (13.63) finished third in a close 100 dash, .47 seconds behind winner Naryn Langel of West De Pere and .4 seconds behind Marinette’s Lynsee Bohan in second place. “That was one of her fastest times of the year,” Oconto Falls track coach Karissa Kaiser said of Leja. Kaiser noted a faster start has been instrumental to Leja’s success this season. “We have been working a lot on block starts with her, and she has been showing improvement,” Kaiser said. “That is a big part of sprint running.” Leja was also part of the third-place 400 relay team with Carolyn Malcheski, Kennedy Kratz and Evy O’Harrow. Senior Kayla Virtues was sixth in the discus. While the meet was the last for the Panthers in the Bay Conference, Kaiser noted there will be other Bay opponents coming along for the ride, as they head to the Eastern Valley Conference. Denmark, Luxemburg-Casco and Marinette also move to the Eastern Valley. “It was exciting to do well in the last meet, and we will see what next year will bring,” Kaiser said.
