‘Never pull over’ is advice for Gillett grads

The atmosphere was lighthearted and optimistic as the 2015 Gillett High School graduating class prepared to receive their diplomas on Sunday.
Christensen stamps ticket to D3 state track
Suring High School sophomore John Christensen advanced to the WIAA Division 3 state track championship in La Crosse as an extra qualifier in the high jump. The sophomore placed fifth in the high jump at Friday’s Rosholt sectional, clearing the bar at 6 feet.

BASEBALL West De Pere 1 Oconto Falls 0 Oconto Falls held the Phantoms scoreless through the first five innings, but lost a 1-0 pitchers’ dual Wednesday at West De Pere. West De Pere’s Brendan Meissner struck out 11 Panthers, allowed three hits and issued no walks. Evan Sigmund struck out six hitters, walked one and also allowed three hits by the Phantoms (20-5, 14-2 Bay). Riley Gruetzmacher was 2 for 3 for the Panthers (12-8, 8-8 Bay Conference).
Oconto Falls suffers opening-round regional loss
The third time was not the charm for the Oconto Falls High School softball team in the opening round of the WIAA Division 2 regional against visiting Seymour. After defeating the Thunder in two regular-season meetings, Oconto Falls fell 6-2 Wednesday to bring an early end to its season. TU provides funds for trout habit improvement
Area trout streams will receive some extra help this summer due to the efforts of the Green Bay, Marinette and Oconto chapters of Trout Unlimited, an organization dedicated to protecting and improving trout waters. The contribution to the Peshtigo Department of Natural Resources was $15,000, which will be used to hire a summer work crew. Area streams where work is planned include Eagle Creek, K.C.
Golf outing to raise funds for honor flight
The fourth annual Vets 4 Vets of Oconto County benefit golf outing will be held June 6 at Red Maple Golf Course in Suring. The event raises funds for World War II and Korean War veterans to take the Old Glory Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. The event starts at 10:30 a.m., with registration at 9:30 a.m. The entry fee is $65 per person. The cost includes 18 holes of golf, cart rental, buffet and gathering to follow.
Gillett trio make way to state track
For the second consecutive year, Gillett Secondary School seniors Taylor Kohls and Akeem Bates are en route to the WIAA Division 3 state track and field finals in La Crosse. They will be joined this year by sophomore distance runner Lauren Herzog. All three qualified at the WIAA Division 3 sectional at Rosholt on Friday. Kohls broke her own school shot put record for the third time, throwing 37 feet, 5 3/4 inches to take second in the girls meet.
OFHS track shut out at sectionals
Junior Bailey Wolf was just 15 seconds from qualifying for this week’s WIAA Division 2 state track championship in La Crosse. The Oconto Falls High School distance runner placed fifth in the 1,600-meter run in the sectional Friday at Little Chute. She finished in 5 minutes, 31.42 seconds. The top four finishers advanced to state. The Panthers girls took 26th among 32 teams in the sectional.
Panthers qualify for boys golf sectionals
The Oconto Falls High School golf team advanced to the WIAA Division 2 sectional finals following a third-place finish May 26 at Crystal Springs Golf Course in Seymour. Marinette captured the regional championship with a 321, with Waupaca (328) second and Oconto Falls (339) third. Leading the way for the Panthers was senior Jacob Stoinski, who took second among 45 golfers, finishing with a 4-over-par 76.
