Catherine “Dolly” A. Karban, 94, Coleman, went to her eternal life on Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2015, surrounded by her loving family. The youngest of five children was born on Jan. 26, 1921, in Oconto Falls to Joseph and Katherine (Lorenz) Schuessler. Dolly grew up in Oconto Falls, where she attended St. Anthony Catholic School and later Oconto Falls High School, graduating with the Class of 1939.

Marvin M. Schlorf, 92, Oconto Falls, died Monday evening, Dec. 28, 2015, at Sharpe Care. He was born July 10, 1923, in the town of Morgan to Herman and Elizabeth (Birr) Schlorf. Marvin grew up in Morgan, where he attended North Morgan School and started working on the family farm as a young boy. It was also during this period of his life where he became interested in music. On Dec. 14, 1946, he married Beatrice Gaertig in Oconto Falls.

I used to sometimes have my freshman English students read William Gibson’s remarkable play “The Miracle Worker.” The play was derived from Helen Keller’s autobiography, “The Story of My Life,” and it aired originally in a 1957 “Playhouse 90” production.

A wallet with money and credit cards was found Dec. 20 on Central Avenue and was returned to its owner. An Oconto Falls woman, 65, backed into a parked vehicle Dec. 20 on South Main Street. Her vehicle sustained minor damage, and she was cited for unsafe backing. The parked vehicle, owned by an Oconto Falls resident, sustained moderate damage. Police initiated a drug investigation Dec. 22.

Freward, 74, Oconto, on felony charges of arson of a building without consent of the owner and first-degree recklessly endangering safety, which allegedly occurred Dec. 21, 2015, in Oconto. A three-way race for mayor is shaping up in Gillett. As of Dec. 31, incumbent Irene Drake, Tim Christensen and William Pecha had declared their candidacy. The deadline for filing was 5 p.m. Tuesday. A primary election on Feb. 16 will narrow the field to two candidates for the spring election, to be held April 5. Drake, the city’s first woman mayor, is seeking her third two-year term.

The motives of two teens accused of spraying a cleaning solution in their teacher’s soda bottle should be a question for a jury to decide, according to Oconto County Circuit Court Judge Jay Conley. Conley said he found probable cause a felony was committed by Gillett Secondary School students Hailey Brock and Gavin Gilbertson, and the case should proceed to arraignment. “This is one of those cases in which there are competing inferences,” he said

To the editor: Sorry, people, the teens who pulled the prank on their teacher deserve what they are charged with. They already ruined their lives by pulling the prank. It’s their problem. They made their beds; they lie in them. Also, I’m sick of people getting away with things or getting light sentences.
