Short-handed Bears can’t keep up with Shiocton

The Bonduel High School girls basketball coaching staff was able to get a good look at many of its reserve players on the court Thursday night, but not by choice. After senior forward Taylor Weier went down with an ankle injury and Danee Collier exited after an apparent concussion, along with Hayley and Emily Sorenson missing the game for school violations, it was time for many new faces to step up. Suspicious car reported near Clintonville schools
The Clintonville Police Department has received three reports of a suspicious vehicle near St. Martin Lutheran and Rexford-Longfellow Elementary schools this week, according to a press release issued Thursday. Few village board races on April ballot
Birnamwood and Mattoon residents will decide village board races in April, but most other village candidates across the area are running opposed. Here is a partial listing of area village, town and city races on the April 5 ballot, with primaries to be held Feb. 16 as needed. The filing deadline for the spring election was 5 p.m.

Relay for Life events scheduled
The American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Shawano-Menominee will hold a kickoff for the annual event from 6-7 p.m. Jan. 21 at the Shawano Four Seasons Resort, 201 Airport Road. The society is inviting people who are interested in learning more and getting involved in the event to attend. The kickoff program will honor cancer survivors and caregivers. Attendees can register teams for the 2016 Relay for Life, which will be held from 8 a.m.

Morgan K. Huglen
Morgan Kenneth Huglen, 96, of Iola, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016, at St. Michael’s Hospital in Stevens Point. Morgan was born in Northland on Oct. 27, 1919. He was the son of the late Selmer Huglen and Helma (Nymoen) Huglen Holmes. He was married to Eleanor (Wrolstad) Huglen on Jan. 17, 1942, in San Diego, California.

No deal yet on health insurance
With health insurance for hundreds of Shawano County residents at stake, representatives of ThedaCare health system and insurer Network Health met Thursday to try salvaging a 5-year-old partnership. Shawano County authorities arrested a 50-year-old Shawano man Thursday after raiding an alleged drug operation in the town of Waukechon. Sheriff’s detectives and deputies executed a search warrant about 9 a.m.

Packers defense ready help carry playoff load
