As I have mentioned in previous columns, I became hopelessly bewitched by the spirits of long-dead lumberjacks when I joined the staff of the Holt and Balcom Logging Camp in Lakewood. The camp was badly deteriorated, and subsequent efforts to restore it took seven long years.

That’s the message coach Mark Fredy had for his team Aug. 20 after Marion/Tigerton fell to the Thunderbirds in Marion. The Thunderbirds were a last-minute replacement to the Thundercatz’ schedule after Gillett decided earlier this month to suspend its 8-player varsity season for 2026.

The Panthers golf team placed in the middle of a home triangular at River Island Golf Course.

Wrightstown placed first at 186, followed by Oconto Falls at 198 and Waupaca at 240.

Shawano 5, Green Bay Preble 2

The Shawano tennis team (3-5) defeated Green Bay Preble (1-6) by a 5-2 score riding a sweep of the singles matches to earn the win.

Michele Ann Romane (nee Cornell), of Ellisville, Missouri, was baptized into the hope of Christ’s resurrection Aug. 18, 2026.

Members of the Shawano County Executive Committee on Aug. 19 approved what’s called a “heads-up” resolution alerting the bond market that the county intends to borrow $29 million for the first phase of a $121 million building project.

The full county board is expected to follow suit Aug. 26.

Members of the Shawano County Historical Society are hoping to add on to Heritage Park, a site that features several 19th century buildings on Shawano’s north side.
