Changing landscapes: What’s new with the high school building project?

The new weight room is already being used, crews are digging the orchestra pit, Dumpsters are filled with old lighting fixtures and, oh yes, the stadium is nearly ready to welcome the Hawks football and soccer teams for the 2026 season.

Those are just some of the updates underway at Shawano Community High School.

Vandals hit WOW Art Park

Another act of vandalism has occurred in the WOW Art Park in Wittenberg.

Sometime during the last weekend in June, vandals used spray paint to deface one of the pieces of art at the park on East Vinal Street.

The Shawano County Sheriff’s Department was notified. Photos and videos of the damage have been turned over as part of the investigation.

New data shows 35% of Shawano County households can’t afford basics

The Shawano Area United Way in partnership with United Way of Wisconsin released the 2026 State of ALICE report, a data-driven look at the realities faced by asset limited, income constrained, employed (ALICE) households.

The report reveals that 35% of households in Shawano County and 48% of households in Menominee County cannot afford the basic cost of living and struggle to get by.

First cutting of alfalfa hay 97% complete

Wisconsin had five days suitable for fieldwork statewide for the week ending June 28, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Herbicide and fertilizer applications continued, hay was cut where fields were dry enough, and cranberries were in bloom.

Nicolet Plastics marked the occasion June 25 by holding an open house for the public, customers and suppliers at its 41,000-square foot production facility, located at 16685 State Highway 32, Mountain.

Get pumped for some new bike action

There’s a new biking adventure in Shawano.

A pump track playground has been installed at Kuckuk Park on the southwest side of the city on Oak Park Drive.

Pump tracks are already available in Green Bay, Appleton and Wausau, but this is the first in Shawano County.
