Hawks lose season opener The Shawano Community High School baseball team had a rough outing to start the season Monday, losing on the road to Oshkosh North 10-0 in five innings. The game was the first chance for the Hawks had to get outside this season and its first action against an opponent. Taylor Prey took the loss, pitching three innings, striking out five, allowing seven hits and eight earned runs. Will Clark earned the win for Oshkosh Nort

Man dies in accident cutting tree
A Leopolis man was killed Monday in a logging accident in the town of Grant, authorities said. Jeffrey W. Sousek, 48, was struck by a tree in a wooded area off Leopolis Road in the town of Grant shortly before 3 p.m., according to the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department. Sousek was able to use his phone to call a neighbor for help.

Former police chief returns to Shawano
The question for Mark Kohl, who will return to duty as Shawano police chief next month after a 12-year absence, isn’t why is he coming back. “The question I kept asking myself is, ‘Why did I leave?’” Kohl said. At the time, Kohl said, there were personal issues in his family that required him to move back to the Fox Valley. Kohl is originally from Appleton. After leaving Shawano, he became an instructor at Fox Valley Technical College.

Health Care Volunteer Award
Editor’s note: This is the sixth, and final, article in a series profiling winners of the Celebration of Giving awards presented by Shawano Area Community Foundation Inc. for outstanding volunteerism. The winners were honored at a gala Tuesday. As a little girl Barbara Erickson pretended to play the piano, so her mom offered to send her to lessons.

SACF salutes volunteers at gala
The Shawano Area Community Foundation honored community volunteers at its fifth annual Celebration of Giving gala Tuesday at The Gathering in Shawano. “As of this evening we will have recognized 34 individuals or groups for their volunteer service and have distributed $34,000 to area nonprofit agencies,” said Wendy Crawford, gala co-chair.

The ladies who live at 909 Sycamore St. have found a new hobby, and it’s not bird watching. They have discovered the handsome police detective who lives across the street and are determined that he will come over for tea, no matter what it takes. What it takes is a murder—or two. Laugh-out loud moments ensue in the play “Bull in a China Shop,” written by C. B.

Roger Erickson
Roger Erickson, 83, Gillett, passed away with his family by his side on Friday, April 4, 2014. He was born on Oct. 22, 1930, to the late Carl and Cora (Beilfus) Erickson. At the age of 17, Roger joined the United States Army during the Korean War. He proudly served his country, and in the process received a Bronze Star.

Dorothy J. Luedeman-Lindner
Dorothy J. Luedeman-Lindner passed away on April 7, 2014. Dorothy was born June 5, 1928, in Fairchild to the late Thaddeus and Anna Flick. She married Robert Luedeman on Aug. 13, 1949. They lived in Gillett and spent their winters in Florida until Robert passed away on April 4, 1998. While living in Florida, Dorothy met, then married Andrew Lindner on Oct. 26, 2001. The couple lived in Florida until Andy preceded Dorothy in death on Nov.

As I’m writing this, the Badgers are just heading into the Final Four of this year’s March Madness, so I can’t talk about how they did. (Let’s hope they won it all!) But a question started nagging me as I watched games: When did they start calling it March Madness?

Survey shows need to improve our health
To the editor: Thank you very much for including the articles “Oconto among less healthy counties in state” and “County adopts health improvement plan” in the April 2 issue of the Times Herald. This kind of information is critical to every county resident, especially seeing that our county is doing poorly in so many categories. Every individual from adolescent to elder has responsibility for his or her own health.
