About 24 years ago, one of my sons told me that I could play canasta in Yahoo games. Canasta is one of the card games that I would play with my kids as they were growing up. I hadn’t played it for years, so one night I wandered into the Yahoo games site. I am not great at being able to find my way into and through websites to find what I need to find, but that night I did. Once I got in there, I discovered I could play Sheepshead.

Pieces by Peace is the name of the group of women who get together on Fridays at Peace United Church of Christ to make lap quilts. “We make a lot of quilts,” Susie Rindt said. “We help each other.” Rindt and Judy Felckowski lead the group. Former church member Bonnie Gleesing started the group in 2009.

Bob and Dolly Burdick volunteered to help build a Habitat for Humanity home in Menominee County. Dolly was born in Baraboo, but then traveled the world as an Army brat. She returned and graduated from Baraboo High School, then earned a degree in medical technology from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and a master’s from UW-Oshkosh in public administration.

An influx of underclassmen will join a talented group of returning players on the Shawano Community High School softball team, which last year won a WIAA Division 2 regional championship. Area residents will have two opportunties to meet Gary Baseman, whose work is displayed as part of the current exhibit at WOWSpace in Wittenberg. Baseman is a painter, illustrator, video and performance artist, animator, TV/movie producer and toy designer. Arletta J. “Arlee” Davids, 75, of Bowler passed away peacefully on April 1, 2014 in Antigo. She was born on the Stockbridge-Munsee Indian Reservation on Dec. 1, 1938, to the late Adrian “Cobby” and Angela Gardner. Arlee was united in marriage to James “Jim” Davids in May 1957 at the Church of the Wilderness.

Mary Catherine (nee Hawley) Wallin was born on April 22, 1927, in Green Bay and passed on March 31, 2014, at the Wealshire of Bloomington, Minn. She was preceded in death by parents Arthur C. Hawley and Janet Ann Guldan Hawley, and an older brother, Thomas (Bernice). Mary Catherine had been lovingly referred to as TuTu by grandson Andy and as M.C. by friends. She is survived by husband Robert B.

Lyle Eugene Schwenke, 90, of the town of Wescott, passed away Thursday, April 3, 2014, at a local nursing home. Born on April 7, 1923, in the town of Richmond, he was the son of the late William and Helena (Schultz) Schwenke. Lyle lived in the Shawano area all his life, except for the years he served with the United States Army during World War II.
