Oconto Falls School District officials have approached the city with a proposal to transfer ownership of the Jefferson School site to the city. The school-owned property has been incorporated into Pine Grove Park, and Superintendent Dave Polashek on June 10 asked City Council members if the city wants to acquire the property as an addition to the park. One snag in the transfer stems from the title of one of two parcels for the property.

Melissa Trepanier, a 15-year veteran of the Suring School Board, submitted her letter of resignation on Wednesday.

A Stiles couple anxious to act on the same-sex marriage license application they filed in Oconto County last week will wait to tie the knot. Lexi Woodworth, 22, and Kate McDermott, 25, have been in a relationship for several years and hope to marry. U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb ruled June 6 that the state’s gay marriage ban violated the U.S. Constitution. For a week, same-sex couples across the state were able to marry.

A missing Peshtigo man was found dead Tuesday morning in the town of Little River, according to the Oconto County Sheriff’s Department. Officials reported receiving a call about a moped being found in a ditch along County Road Y. Law enforcement arrived and found the body of Kelly Peters, 30, near the moped.

They didn’t even bother to sugarcoat their message. Two engineers involved in a road construction project in Oconto Falls faced a crowd of about 75 people and admitted the two-year project in the heart of the city will be unpleasant. “This is going to be pain for all of you. This is construction. There’s going to be dust.

Anyone driving that section of the path around the Falls just north of Spruce early Monday morning might have been blinded by all the bright orange in the road. From a distance, one could not tell what was going on, but obviously something was up.

The recent death of one of my Oconto Falls High School classmates, Janet Valenta Haffeman, sent my mind racing back in time to our high school days and even a few years before that. Janet was one of my favorite roller-skating partners back in the ’50s.

The Oconto Falls High School Music Department awarded $200 scholarships to students who participated in choir or band for the past four years and excelled in musicianship, leadership and character. The choir recipients are Arianna Bloom, Eva Finke, Megan Heller, Kaylie Hetzel, Hannah Knutson, Carly Lemke and Kaitlyn Spaude. The band recipients are Rebecca Doan, Holly Johnston, Cody Tappa, Adam Thomson and Stephanie Wirtz.

Greg Zeitler received the 2013-14 Educator of Excellence Award, sponsored by the Nicolet Oconto Retired Teachers Association, for the Gillett School District. He was selected by the Gillett School District faculty. Zeitler graduated from Coleman High School. He received his bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay in 1993.
