Artists like the vibe of Shawano Folk Music Festival
The Shawano Folk Music Festival does many things to draw interest from hundreds of bands across the country. “It’s incredibly well run, and word has spread around the country that it’s a great festival,” said honorary co-director Joe Jencks, of the band Brother Sun. Folk festival favorites named honorary directors
Nationally acclaimed band Brother Sun fits well with the Shawano Folk Festival and the vibe that festival organizers hope to accomplish. So organizers want to give Brother Sun a big role at this year’s festival. The Shawano Folk Music Festival Committee has selected Brother Sun to be the honorary co-directors of the festival that runs from Friday to Sunday. “They were really fun and collaborative,” festival co-director Nicole Henquist said.

Shawano falls 1 game short at state
Shawano could not maintain its momentum entering the American Legion Class AA state tournament title game Sunday against River Falls. A day after drubbing River Falls 16-6 and an hour removed from a gritty 6-5 win against Waterford, the Patriots ran into River Falls pitching ace James Witt. Witt struck out eight and held the Patriots to six hits as River Falls claimed the state championship, 14-4.

Probe continues in rollover wreck
A man remains hospitalized with injuries suffered in a July 23 rollover accident that is still under investigation by the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department. Jeremy Young, 42, of Hortonville, was injured when his SUV collided with another vehicle and rolled over into a ditch on County Road BE in the town of Wescott. Investigators believe Young was engaged in a dispute with a passenger riding in the other vehicle, which was being driven by Young’

Wilma E. Zernicke
Wilma E. Zernicke, 90, of Bonduel, passed away on July 31, 2015. Wilma was born in Shawano to Louis and Alma (Westphal) Dahms. Wilma married George Zernicke on Oct. 26, 1946. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and a member of the altar guild.

Patriots advance to final day of state tournament
After two innings, Shawano American Legion left no doubt, ultimately pounding River Falls 16-6 Saturday to advance to the final day of the American Legion Class AA state baseball tournament in Kaukauna. The Patriots scored nine runs the first two innings, including six in the second when they batted around. “We were absolutely shell-shocked to the start the game,” River Falls coach Ryan Bishop said.
