William “Bill” J. Ek, 79, summer resident of Shell Lake, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 2015, at Indianhead Medical Center in Shell Lake. He was born July 31, 1936, in Shell Lake, to Walter and Annastasia (Candell) Ek. Bill was married in Shell Lake, on June 22, 1957, to Karen Rae Peterson.

To the editor: Yes, the community did support and continues to support the the Oconto Falls Area Senior and Community Center during the last nine-year effort to update the total outside, inside and operational systems. The amount raised in the first fundraising effort was about about $64,764.

In my 37 years of teaching English, I spent many hours with a red pen in my hand, circling misspelled words or writing “sp” above them. All of this was done because of my firmly held conviction that spelling was important to good communication. And then a few weeks ago, a friend forwarded an email to me that surprised me a lot. The gist of the article was that spelling was not so important after all. Here’s a paragraph from that email.

Oconto Falls is sending two players to the Fox River American Legion senior all-star game in Kimberly. Outfielders Connor Sefcik and Brett Ash will represent the American Conference in the game at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sunset Park. Both are first-time selections. “It made me feel great that people recognize me for the hard work I did throughout the season,” Sefcik said.
