Thoughts already beginning to turn toward Christmas

Murphy’s law says that everything that can go wrong will, and at the worst possible moment. That hasn’t always been true for me, but lately I have begun to wonder. I am planning on the family gathering here for Thanksgiving; it seems that has been the pattern over the past few years. On Monday I noticed there was water on the floor between the toilet and the cabinet. A closer look confirmed that the toilet was leaking. I called my local plumber, only to find he is gone for the week on vacation. Well, I guess everyone needs vacation now and then. I tried a couple of other plumbers and found that everyone is busy this week, and those that aren’t busy, are hunting. So, that leaves me with a leaky toilet and a houseful of company. In perspective, I realize that it is not the major problem I first thought it to be. After all, it is family and they will understand, and besides, if all else fails, I do have another bathroom that can be used. Of course, on Monday I am having my card club at my house. Will the toilet still be leaking? I have no way to answer that, but, however it is, it will have to do. Right after all of this, Christmas is smacking us right in the face. I refuse to let it totally overtake Thanksgiving, but I admit that I already aided in decorating a Christmas tree. Not at my house, but at the Old Village Hall in Tigerton for the annual Festival of Trees. It was one among many other trees and Christmas decorations. A few Christmas carols on the radio, and I might just get in the mood. I am usually trying to put up outside decorations on the weekend after Thanksgiving, but this year that is not likely to happen. I haven’t yet found everything in my newly rearranged garage. The main thing missing is the extension cords. I know things had to be shifted around to be able to put up a ramp during those first weeks after my surgery this summer. The borrowed, portable ramp is still sitting in the garage also. A reminder of how thankful I need to be for family who put up and took down that heavy ramp, and the friend who loaned it to me. One of these days I need to get it back to them. While some years I am in a rush to get things done, this year is different. My body is still healing, and while I think I can do a lot of stuff, I find I really am not able to do as much as I think. Things start aching, and I find myself sitting with an ice pack or heating pad, whatever feels best at the time. A verse kind of sums up my feelings: “The Lord is at hand; so not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and you minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7.
