2 killed in reservation crash

Two people were killed and two others were injured Monday night in what Menominee Tribal Police described as a nearly head-on traffic collision on the Menominee Indian reservation. Police identified the deceased victims as Derrick “Jammer” Perez and Eugene Wescott, both tribal members who were driving the two vehicles in the incident. Middle school passes voter test
Residents in the Shawano School District voted nearly 2-to-1 on Tuesday to approve borrowing $9.25 million for improvements to the community’s 60-year-old middle school. Results released by the school district showed that the districtwide referendum was supported by 1,338 voters and opposed by 717 voters. The outcome means school administrators can borrow $9.25 million and make repairs and upgrades that referendum backers described as long overdu

Rodgers, Packers struggle in 29-10 loss to Broncos
The result Sunday night shouldn't fool anyone — these teams really could meet again this season. If they do, it would be in the Super Bowl, of course, and Green Bay would need to be better. A lot better. Aaron Rodgers and the Packers didn't show up in the most hyped game of the season. Denver won 29-10, and this one was all Peyton Manning and the Broncos. Rodgers was 14 of 22 for just 77 yards — one of the least productive games of his career.

At 101, Aunt Gertie continues to amaze
Spending the past few days driving to and from southern Wisconsin and visiting friends and relatives, I am glad to be home. Home isn’t always perfect, but it is comfortable, and I know where things are. I can sit in my familiar chair and sleep in my bed that my back knows so well. The main reason for the trip was to visit my 101-year-old Aunt Gertie. She is my dad’s sister and amazes me every time I see her.

Winterizing the farm
I don’t know about you, but I’m not looking forward to the onslaught of winter weather that soon will be here. Waiting for me on our deck were my outside flip-flops. Slipping into them, I enjoyed zipping out of the house and quickly running out to the garden. In the heat of the summer I headed outside to do barn chores in shorts, especially if I didn’t have to handle hay bales.

Erika VanOrder is the president of the Wittenberg Area Chamber of Commerce. She was born in Sheboygan and graduated from Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School. VanOrder went to cosmetology school and also got an associate degree from the University of Phoenix with a minor in human resources and major in business management.
