Perhaps February can chase away the winter blahs

I am beginning to believe that I have a bad case of the “winter blahs.” Even though the days and weeks have been humming past fairly quickly since January began, I keep wanting to turn the page to February. Now it is almost time. I am not really sure what makes February such a great month. Of course, for the romantics, there is Valentine’s Day, with date nights, flowers and candy. That time was once exciting for me, but now, as a senior citizen, it has lost some of its glow. Of course, between the fall I had last week, which has slowed me down more than it probably should, and the thought of freezing rain or snow storm, I remain cabin-fevered when normally I would be off and gone somewhere. At least I got to rest. I wonder why the four-letter word “rest” is bugging me so much. Is it because I got more rest than anyone could want most of last summer? There is literally nothing on TV that I want to watch when I am home. I did a lot of book reading early in January, but my favorite authors aren’t writing books fast enough, and I haven’t found a new favorite as yet. I have thought about organizing things for doing my taxes but haven’t found the urge to begin that tedious journey as yet. I know that will leave my scrambling to find papers that I remember getting but have no idea where they are now. The other usual winter project is organizing the year’s worth of columns in a binder. So far, that hasn’t caught my attention as yet either. Of course, that always becomes a major job, simply because I have to read each one as I prepare them for placement. Then it prompts me to look back in other binders to read columns that I recall from past years. I will soon need to make more room on my shelf to keep them all together. About 10 years ago I decided to select my favorite columns and put them into a book. I was so excited about that and immediately dove into all of the binders of columns. I went so far as to try to figure out if the columns would be chronological or if I would put them together by topics. While my mind debated on that, I tried to figure out which ones to put in, and which ones to leave go by the wayside. Of course, I had to re-edit each one, because it seems I seldom think the same way more than once. So, here I am, with no book, and columns still in binders, labeled by year. As winter goes, it hasn’t been the worst; a couple short blasts of below zero, but not like I recall from past years. One major snowstorm late in December but nothing near what landed out in the eastern part of the country. The scarier parts were the freezing rain, but I arrived safe and sound back home both times. So, what exactly is my complaint? More to the point, what is my cure? Some people travel south to warmer climates, but I don’t have any urge to travel. I am getting way too attached to my home, and my bed, and the routine I am used to. Oh, this morning the sun is shining, and those “winter blahs” are melting away, at least for now.
