WalMart awarded 20 teachers from Suring Elementary School with $50 reward cards to purchase classroom supplies to help students start the year off right. As part of the Walmart Teacher Reward Program, the local educators were honored at an awards ceremony Oct.

The five high schools in Oconto County are vying to win one of two cash prizes totaling $30,000 to be used for classroom technology. Schools in Gillett, Lena, Oconto, Oconto Falls and Suring are participating in Cellcom’s Project Innovate, in partnership with Nsight Telservices . The community voting challenge began Oct. 19 and ends at midnight Nov. 20.

Twenty-six chickens now call Lena High School their home. The agriculture department has a new chicken coop, built by Kelby Cook Construction with the help of Lena High students, parents, FFA alumni members and donors. Bailey Wolf finished her high school cross-country career Saturday at her fourth state cross-country meet. The Oconto Falls senior finished in 45th place with a time of 20 minutes, 35 seconds in the WIAA Division 2 meet.

Oconto Falls High School golfer Rebecca Berkovitz was named to the Academic All-State team for the fall girls golf season. Students nominated for the honor by Golf Coaches Association of Wisconsin members must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.25, participate in at least 75 percent of their team’s varsity matches and be at least a sophomore. Over 300 athletes from 89 high schools were honored this year.

It’s one playoff match the Suring High School volleyball team won’t soon forget. Especially since it was on a big stage in the WIAA Division 4 sectional semifinals. Down 2-1 after blowing big leads and game points in both Games 2 and 3 Thursday, Suring never quit.

From the beginning of Saturday’s match, the Suring High School girls volleyball team was overmatched by back-to-back WIAA Division 4 state champion Newman Catholic.
