A new public works director will be coming on board for Shawano in July after the Shawano Common Council chose from three finalists at the end of May. Mike Mahloch, currently the utilities superintendent for the village of Bellevue, was selected to be the public works director.

Members of the Shawano School Board reached a consensus June 19 and committed the district to not abandon Shawano Community Middle School for at least the next decade. Instead, the board agreed an immediate investment in critical maintenance is needed to preserve the structural integrity of the school.

Three requests to use federal funds for courthouse and sheriff’s department projects have been tabled for a month, a decision made June 19 by the Shawano County Executive Committee. “We have a jail project that was a CIP (capital improvement project) that came in way over budget as you recall,” said Jim Davel, administrative coordinator. “The original estimate was $1.2 million.

Shawano County officials will once again work toward a long-range building plan, with members of the county’s executive committee reaching a consensus on the idea at their June 19 meeting. A portion of state Highway 29 was shut down overnight June 20 as law enforcement negotiated with a man who threatened them with explosives and other devices, the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department reported. Gov. Tony Evers signed a $4.1 million contract to improve U.S. Highway 45 between Wittenberg and Antigo from state Highway 29 to the Langlade County line. Work is scheduled to begin June 24. Northeast Asphalt, Inc is the prime contractor for the project.
