Sturgeon Guard fills valuable role

Sturgeon are not only ancient marvels of biological science, they also are a species that must be protected. The Department of Natural Resources has created an organization to ensure they are. The Sturgeon Guard, created by the Department of Natural Resources in the middle of the 1970s and opened to the general public in 1988, recruits volunteers to man popular sites to protect the sturgeon during their annual spawning season. Sheriff's campaign runs afoul of city ordinance
Sheriff Randy Wright started his re-election campaign a little too soon as far as the city of Shawano is concerned. Wright had to remove his campaign signs from around the city this week after being told by Building Inspector Mike Miller that he violated a city ordinance specifying when signs are allowed to go up. The ordinance prohibits campaign signs prior to 60 days before an election; in this case, the Aug.

There have been whispers and secretive looks among the six children of Kelli and Rob Chelberg about what they will do for Mother’s Day. Kelli expects it will be breakfast for her and her mother, Joan Keasling, who lives with the Chelbergs. “Rob is very good at doing something for me and my mom,” she said.

Shawano falls to New London The Shawano Community High School baseball team lost 6-3 to Bay Conference foe New London on Thursday in Shawano. Grant Wainio and Alex Frechette led Shawano with two hits each. Clint Dallas took the loss, giving up six runs on seven hits in four innings. He also struck out three and walked two. Lane Hanadel earned the win for New London.

Packers take safety in 1st round
The Packers are banking on another former Alabama star to give their team a boost. Green Bay picked Ha Ha Clinton-Dix with the 21st overall pick of the NFL draft Thursday night, adding a hard-hitting safety to a defense that needed playmakers.

Olsen sets school hurdles record
Austin Olsen set a Gresham/Bowler high school record in the 300-meter hurdles as the boys track team took second Thursday at the Weyauwega-Fremont Open in Weyauwega. Olsen broke the 300 record with a time of 41.83 seconds. He also won the 110 hurdles and the 200 dash. Drew Payne won four events, taking firsts in the triple jump, long jump, 100 dash and 4x100 relay with Trace Miller, Brandon Miller and Joe Serrano.

Wildcats get 10-5 win over Wild Rose
Christian Haffner pitched a complete game, Scott Cerveny had two triples and three RBIs, and the Gresham Community High School baseball team beat Wild Rose 10-5 Thursday in Gresham. The Wildcats got on their Central Wisconsin Conference-10 rival early, scoring three runs in the first and adding two in the second. “Getting the lead helps anybody,” Gresham coach Troy Kuhn said.
