Roman J. Muskavitch, 91, of the town of Belle Plaine, Shawano, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, May 17, 2014, at ManorCare of Shawano, following a brief stay. Roman was born Oct. 2, 1922, in Shawano, a son of the late Roman and Anna (Engel) Muskavitch. Roman attended Sacred Heart Catholic Grade School and later Shawano High School, graduating in 1941. Roman lived and farmed in the town of Belle Plaine his entire life.

Kenneth John “Ken” Bond, 80, of Shawano, passed away Sunday, May 18, 2014, in Shawano. Born on June 7, 1933, in Chicago, he was the son of the late Casper and Rose (Wasielewski) Bond. After graduating from high school, Ken furthered his education, earning a doctorate in philosophy. He worked as a college instructor and as a superintendent of schools throughout Illinois, Wisconsin, North Dakota, Colorado and Indiana.

Nine students from Shawano Community High School are in Knoxville, Tenn., this week to compete in the Destination Imagination Global Finals. The two teams — McFly’s DIvergent Thinkers and Above and Beyond — left on Monday for the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.

Harold “Junior” C. Vague Jr., 83, passed away Sunday, May 18, 2014, at Shawano Medical Center, Shawano. Harold was born in Oak Creek on June 13, 1930, son of the late Martha (nee Sukkert) and Harold C. Vague Sr. On July 7, 1951, he was united in marriage to Doris M. Burmeister. Harold was known by many as Junior. He owned and operated Harold’s Tap for 46 years. After many years of hard work he retired up north to his favorite place — the cabin.

Shawano resident Jamie Awonohopay, who served in the Army Reserves from 1996-2002, was among the members of the Native American Women Warriors participating in the Menominee Nation pow-wow for the first time Saturday and Sunday. The NAWW was founded in 2010 in Florida to bring attention to women serving in the armed forces, especially Native American women. “Just by being part of it is an honor,” Awonohopay said.

A recently retired four-star Army general will present the Memorial Day address in Shawano on Monday. Gen. Robert W. Cone, who retired in March after 35 years of service, is relocating to the Shawano area. “He retired this year and is moving up here,” said Bill Rosin, president of the Allied Veterans Council, which coordinates the city’s Memorial Day program. Cone most recently served as commander of United States Army Training Doctrine.

A Shawano police drug detail over the weekend at several city taverns netted the referral of drug charges against three people, including a felony charge against a Bowler man. Police used a confidential informant wired for sound to arrange drug transactions with patrons at four establishments. One of the cases was still under investigation. The operation started just after 10:30 p.m. Friday at Billy’s, 1100 S.

St. Paul Lutheran School in Bonduel is among 26 schools statewide chosen to benefit from taxpayer funding next school year through Wisconsin’s statewide choice program. St. James Lutheran School in Shawano fell a few applications short of the cut. State law mandates that only the 25 private schools and school systems that received the most eligible applications are able to participate in the random drawing for the additional voucher slots.
