Education Week is perfect time to say thanks

Regardless of Monday morning’s single digit temperatures along the path around the Falls, a couple of factors brought a little offsetting warmth for many people. First, the surprisingly resounding Green Bay Packers win Sunday evening was enough to make almost every fan’s start to the work week a warm one. The game was one for the “gold package” season ticket holders. These are the season tickets for the games that used to be played in Milwaukee.

On Nov. 12, 2014, Janet Diane Sleeter, of Suring, formerly of La Verne, California, earned her angel wings after a hard-fought battle with cancer. She passed peacefully in her sleep surrounded by her family and closest friends. Janet was born on Nov.

OFHS girls varsity in rebuilding mode
Oconto Falls High School faces an uphill battle entering the 2014-15 girls basketball season. The Panthers will be without five key graduates after coming within one game of reaching the WIAA Division 3 state finals a year ago.

Boos promoted to finance director
The deputy finance director for Oconto County has been promoted to finance director. The Oconto County Board on Thursday selected Terri Boos to replace the retiring Terry Hinds, effective March 8, 2015. Hinds, directors since 1991, retires on March 6. “I’ve enjoyed my tenure here. It’s been very productive,” Hinds said. As the county’s first finance director, Hinds “set the bar” for the position, he said.

Shawano/Bonduel swimmers compete at state
The WIAA Division 1 state swim meet in Madison on Saturday was a bittersweet experience for Ali Hanson and Clare Martell, the two qualifiers from the Shawano/Bonduel high school girls swimming team. The duo, who grew up swimming together since they were 8 years old, were swimming as teammates for the last time. Hanson, a Shawano Community High School senior, will swim for the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay next year.

Virginia H. Ciesielczyk
Virginia H. Ciesielczyk, 86, of Seymour, passed away on Monday, Nov. 17, 2014, at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Green Bay with her family at her side. She was born on May 26, 1928, daughter of the late Edward and Elizabeth (Zepnick) Hackl. On Aug. 30, 1947, she was united in marriage to Edward Ciesielczyk at St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Isaar. Virginia and Edward celebrated 52 years of marriage. He preceded her in death on Feb. 1, 2000.

Clarice M. Block
Clarice M. Block, 92, of Tigerton, passed away Friday, Nov. 14, 2014, at the Homme Home of Wittenberg. The former Clarice Marie Hansen was born Dec. 25, 1921, in the town of Morris, Shawano County, to Even and Stella (Gilbertson) Hansen. Clarice graduated from Tigerton High School, and she worked for some time in the kitchen at Homme Home. For many years, while raising her children, she did laundry and sewing for families in the area.
