Cellcom has selected three Shawano County nonprofits to receive a share of its annual Green Gifts, which invests money from recycled cell phones back into environmental projects. Shawano Community Middle School will use its $1,000 Green Gift from Cellcom to support a trip to Trees for Tomorrow for a group of 140 seventh grade students.

Questions that surround the process of renting farm land are the focus of a pair of workshops being conducted in the area on Dec. 13. University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension is providing the opportunities for owners of farmland and agricultural producers to find out about land rent realities and options. The free in-person workshop is sponsored by the Extension offices of Langlade, Marinette, Oconto, and Shawano counties.

Patti L. Zeinert, 62, of Bowler, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, Nov. 27, 2023, at her home. Patti was born on June 10, 1961, in Wausau, the daughter of William and Ruth (Falstad) Hamm. On Aug. 23, 1997, Patti was united in marriage to Ricky Zeinert in Bowler. He preceded her in death on Sept. 2, 2016. Patti worked in the kitchen and housekeeping at North Star Casino for many years.

Joyce R. LaViolette, 81, of Shawano, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 26, at her home. Joyce was born the first daughter of Thomas and Hilda (Friedman) Kozlowski in Little Suamico on Nov. 26, 1942, during a blizzardy day. Joyce was raised on the family farm. On May 1, 1965, she was united in marriage to Jerry LaViolette at St. Pius Catholic Church. Jerry preceded her in death in 2019; they enjoyed 54 loving years together.
