Ballo seeks to replace existing district attorney

Alec Ballo is looking to replace Greg Parker as the Shawano-Menominee County District Attorney, and he made a stop at the May 8 Shawano Common Council meeting to talk about why he’s running. Ballo noted he’s running for several reasons. One is to speed up the cases going through the court system “When it comes to misdemeanor cases, it takes our court system roughly about a year to process a misdemeanor case,” Ballo said.

Shawano Police Department getting therapy dog
The Shawano Police Department will soon be adding another four-legged employee to hit the streets, but this one won’t be taking down criminals. The Shawano Common Council voted unanimously May 8 to allow the department to get a therapy dog.

Sheboygan North tennis team defeats Pulaski
May 8 Sheboygan North 5, Pulaski 2 Pulaski tennis players won at No. 3 and No. 4 singles in their 5-2 loss to Sheboygan North. At No. 3, Aran Capella defeated Frankie Quasius 6-0, 6-2. Then, Donovan Holderness defeated Will Rollins 6-2, 6-7 (5), 10-6. Justin Freadrich and Ryan Symons lost their singles matches. All three doubles teams also lost.

Shane A. ‘Shane-E-Man’ Latender
Shane A. “Shane-E-Man” Latender, 27, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, May 6, 2024, in Keshena. He was born on May 7 , 1996, in Shawano, to John “Hub” Latender and Linda Sue Penass. He graduated from Shawano Community High School with the class of 2014, where he enjoyed playing baseball.

Robert ‘Bob’ Hammer
Robert “Bob” August Hammer, beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away on Tuesday, May 7, at the age of 86. He was born on Nov. 3, 1937, to the late Lars and Ida (Priem) Hammer in Shawano. He graduated from Shawano High School, class of 1956. Bob was a proud member of the 1956 high school state championship basketball team. 4-H clubs collect over 5,000 books for organizations
Shawano County’s 4-H youth leaders challenged all county 4-H clubs to collect and donate new and gently used books. Clubs demonstrated extreme generosity and competitiveness as they donated over 5,000 books. Clubs were given March and April to collect books. The club that donated the most books per member would be declared the winner and awarded an ice cream sundae party.

Shawano teen attends National 4-H Conference
Shawano 4-H member Taya Jannusch recently attended the 2024 National 4-H Conference in Washington, D.C. She was chosen as one of only nine youth delegates in Wisconsin. The conference annually brings 4-H youths and adults from around the nation to work towards strengthening and expanding the 4-H Youth Development program at the local, state and national levels. The conference is the U.S.
