Eugene A. Cherny, 87, of the town of Matteson, Waupaca County, passed away Wednesday, April 16, 2014, peacefully at his home. Eugene was born on Dec. 3, 1926, in Clintonville, the son of the late Albert and Augusta (Diem) Cherny. When he was a child, Eugene’s family traveled and lived in various areas within the United States, eventually settling near Shawano. Eugene attended Shawano Public Schools and on Feb. 28, 1945, entered the U.S.

Jerome Frederick “Jerry” Blank, 82, formerly of Shawano, passed away on Wednesday, April 9, 2014, in Millstadt, Ill. Jerry was born on June 14, 1931, in Pulcifer, a son of the late Robert and Arlene (Engel) Blank. He attended St. James Lutheran Grade School and later graduated from Shawano High School. In June 1949, he entered the United States Air Force and served for four years during the Korean War. On Oct.

The College of Menominee Nation’s 2014 faculty lecture series begins April 29 with a presentation by Professor Erik Lee at the college’s Keshena campus. A benefit will be held April 26 in Clintonville to help an area man recovering from his fourth brain surgery. The medical bills for Kenneth McCarten, 37, have added up to more than $400,000 since August, when doctors at Shawano Medical Center first discovered he had a 5-inch brain tumor.

Judd Park and Boat Landing is now an official part of Shawano’s park system. The Shawano Common Council this week formerly approved the name change recommended by the Park and Recreation Commission to honor Judd for 31 years of service to the city. Judd retired on March 7 as the park and recreation director.

Shawano officials this week approved a bid for the 2014 concrete sidewalk program, along with more than $200,000 in other spending on capital equipment purchases and services. Work on the city’s sidewalks was awarded to Cerveny Construction Inc., of Shawano, in the amount of $41,150.

Customers shopping in Shawano grocery stores might be shelling out more money than others in the state, according to the latest Marketbasket Survey done by the Wisconsin Farm Bureau.
