Gresham siren rebuilt, back on line

Sewer rates in Clintonville will increase nearly 22 percent over the next two years to help pay for $3.5 million in upgrades at the city’s wastewater treatment plant. The first increase, of about 12 percent, will take effect with the July bills. The second increase, of about 10 percent, will take effect when the improvement project is completed in late 2015 or early 2016.
Hearing set for SMU rate increase
A public hearing has been scheduled next month to consider Shawano Municipal Utilities’ request for an increase in electric rates. The Wisconsin Public Service Commission will hold a teleconference at 9:30 a.m. May 8 from Madison with utility officials in the SMU conference room at 122 N.
New Box in the Wood play going swimmingly
The Box in the Wood Theatre Guild is jumping in the deep end with its latest production, “The Dixie Swim Club.” The show will premiere April 25, with six performances through May 4. All performances will be at the Mielke Arts Center, N5649 Airport Road, Shawano. The play, written by Nicholas Hope, Jamie Wooten and Jessie Jones, focuses on five Southern women who were part of a college swim team in their youth.
Bonduel students qualify for national competition
Two Bonduel High School students will be traveling to the Future Business Leaders of America National Leadership Conference in June. Jared Letter received first place in Business Law and Josh Liesner received third in Word Processing.
Menominee holding sturgeon feast Saturday
The Menominee Nation will celebrate the return of the sturgeon with a feast and celebration pow-wow Saturday at Menominee Indian High School, N500 State Highway 47, Keshena. Grand entries will be held at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., with the feast at 5 p.m. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has agreed to provide the Menominee Nation with the 15 lake sturgeon for the annual cultural event.
Church plans Good Friday cross walk
Area residents will help carry a cross through Shawano on Friday as part of a Good Friday program sponsored by the United Methodist Church. The cross walk will begin at 9 a.m. across the street from the Shawano County Courthouse, 311 N. Main St., with a brief reading of the scriptures and an opening prayer.
Gresham couple wins young farmer award
The award for the 2014 Outstanding Young Farmer was given to Jay and Angie Schultz, of Gresham, on April 4 at the 57th annual Shawano County Agricultural Awards held at The Main Event. The Schultzes operate a fifth-generation, 96-cow dairy farm consisting of Holsteins, Brown Swiss and Jerseys. They also farm about 380 acres of alfalfa, corn and small grains.

November election filing season under way
Tuesday was the first day to circulate nomination papers for the November election, and all three Shawano County incumbents hoping to be on the ballot this fall have taken out papers for another four-year term. Sheriff Randy Wright, Clerk of Courts Sue Krueger and Coroner Mike Jesse are all up for re-election. They each have until 5 p.m. on June 2 to return 200 signatures to the county clerk’s office, as will any potential challengers.
BHS principal selected to lead district
Bonduel High School Principal Patrick Rau has been offered the job of Bonduel School District administrator. The Bonduel School Board chose Rau after a second round of interviews Monday with two finalists for the post being vacated by Peter Behnke. Behnke is retiring in June after 25 years overseeing the district. Rau has been with the school district as principal for six years.
