The Oconto Falls High School softball team beat Seymour 12-6 in a Bay Conference game Thursday in Seymour. The Panthers (2-2, 2-2 Bay) pulled ahead with a four-run second inning and followed that with a six-run third inning. Seymour (0-4, 0-3 Bay) scored two runs in the second and four runs in the third.

It is a game where every stroke matters; just ask the Oconto Falls High School boys golf team. The Panthers finished the WIAA Division 2 regional last season a single stroke behind Bonduel, finishing in fifth place and missing sectionals. Nearly 50 Oconto County residents attended the Department of Natural Resources annual spring fish and wildlife public hearing and the Wisconsin Conservation Congress county conservation meeting April 14 at Suring High School. The meetings, which were held in every county in Wisconsin, help the DNR gauge public opinion on conservation and wildlife management.

An assault in Cecil early Saturday that sent a 27-year-old Gillett man to the hospital was still under investigation Tuesday by the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department. Gene Leroy Weed, 71, passed away at his home in the town of Grover on April 20, 2014. Born Feb. 8, 1943, son of the late Asa and Orlene (Joy) Weed, he graduated from Marinette High School in 1961. After graduation he joined the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam. On March 9, 1968, he married the former Carolyn Johnson.

Bonduel Elementary School Last year a set of laptops was shared by the three sections of fifth-graders. This year, each fifth-grade student has a laptop. The program has been a resounding success. Students may take their laptops home each night. However, the laptops must be brought back the following morning to be checked in and inspected.

Wisconsin health officials are ready to begin expanding the Family Care program that provides in-home care to seven additional counties, but it could take as long as three years to get things ramped up. Gov. Scott Walker said Monday his administration is ready to start work on extending Family Care to Brown, Door, Kewaunee, Marinette, Menominee, Oconto and Shawano counties.
