Four months after the US Air Motorsports Raceway went on the auction block, the ownership of the Shawano County attraction remains unclear. Bonduel senior Clare Martell was the lone swimmer from the lone Shawano/Bonduel to advance out of Saturday’s WIAA Division 1 sectional in Neenah. Martell, who has now made the WIAA State Meet four consecutive seasons in the 100-yard breaststroke, finished in second place with a time of 1:07.34, behind Bay Port’s Erin Samel, who posted a 1:07.07. An up and down season for many of Bonduel High School’s fall sports teams has come to an end. The athletic department on Monday held a banquet in the school commons to recognize the outstanding athletes of the five fall sports. The Bonduel football team finished 8-3 after a loss to Southern Door in the Level 2 playoffs.

Ken Seefeldt was drafted into the Army and served from 1951-1953. He was sent to be an airplane mechanic and then shipped to Korea in a trip that took 15 days and took a toll on many on board. “I got sick,” said Seefeldt, 88. He was stationed at an airfield for a year, 3 miles behind the 38th parallel that divided North and South Korea.

Don Gutt wanted to enlist in the Marine Corps, but his father wouldn’t let him. “He told me I couldn’t go until my brother got back to help him farm,” said Gutt, 88. But when his brother, Victor, got back from his service in World War II, he didn’t want to farm. Finally, at the age of 19, Don enlisted on Jan. 21, 1947, three weeks after the war officially ended.

Clintonville native Eugene G. Schulz spoke about his World War II experiences Thursday as the featured guest at the Clintonville Historical Society’s annual meeting. Schulz, 92, is the author of “The Ghost in General Patton’s Third Army,” a memoir of his time with the XX Corps as part of Gen. George S.

Makaylen Komettor had no idea what was going to happen once she concluded her speech during Shawano Community Middle School’s Veterans Day program Wednesday. Makaylen, an eighth-grader at SCMS, spoke about her aunt’s enlistment in the U.S. Army and how proud she was of her, even though it meant they were apart. “She wanted to ride the tanks,” Makaylen said.
