Family learns of Roger Greetan’s heroism

One area family has been waiting over 48 years to more fully understand exactly what happened that day in July of 1967, when the Vietnam War claimed the life of Roger W. Greetan. Jay Fell was Greetan’s squad leader in the U.S. Army’s Company B, 1st Battalion of the 2nd Infantry Regiment of the 1st Infantry Division. Fell and his wife, Joan, traveled from Tracy, California, to Oconto Falls and met with members of the Greetan family on Oct. 28.

District finalizes Spruce School sale
The Oconto Falls School Board accepted a counter offer of $43,000 for Spruce School after the two septic systems on the property failed their inspections, the school district said in a news release. The School Board on Oct. 12 accepted an offer of $50,000 from Ray and Debra Lane, with the conditions the buyer be responsible for fixing the leaky roof and the school district be responsible for pumping the septic tank.

County taxpayers begin paying jail debt
Oconto County residents will pay more in taxes for 2016 to help cover the cost of building a law enforcement center in Oconto. The County Board on Oct. 29 adopted its 2016 budget and established a tax levy of $17.9 million. No one from the public spoke at the budget hearing that preceded the board’s passage of the budget. The tax rate is $5.41 per $1,000 of assessed property value, up 21 cents, or 4 percent, from the 2015 rate.

20 cats taken from vacant home
Twenty cats have been removed from a vacant home at 306 Jackson St., Oconto Falls, where an elderly woman reportedly left a door ajar and allowed the cats to roam freely in and out of the residence. The Oconto Falls Police Department contacted the Bay Area Humane Society on Nov.

Gillett raises garbage fees
City of Gillett residents will pay $12 more for garbage and recyclable collection in 2016, as the city looks to cover its costs for pick-up. The City Council on Thursday approved an annual fee of $90, up from $78 this year.

Cut sales tax to counteract Lambeau overtax
To the editor, I have been watching the news and reading about the half percent Brown County sales tax for the Lambeau Field expansion from day one. I’m an avid Packers fan and a retired construction worker, and supported the expansion and tax. I live in Oconto County and, like most people here, spend a large part of my disposable income in Brown County.

Former Panthers lead Oshkosh to share of WIAC title
The last time Katelyn Malcheski and Carly Lemke were on the court together in high school was Nov. 4, 2011. In the 2011 WIAA Division 2 state semifinals, the two Oconto Falls High School stars couldn’t quite propel their team to the championship match. Malcheski tallied a team-high 21 kills and Lemke added 17 in a heartbreaking, five-game loss to Tomahawk. Now, four years later, they are back together on the court.

Jill Marie Lust
Jill Marie Lust, Oconto Falls, peacefully passed away at her home on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2015. Jill was married to Jeff Lust on July 29, 1995, and they just celebrated 20 years together. Jill will be greatly missed by her husband, Jeff; daughter, Jamie Trudell; stepsons, Jared (Jolene) Lust, Justin (Kim) Lust; grandchildren, Carter and Aza Lust.
