CMH Spring Fling to include casino games

The ninth annual Spring Fling, a wine, beer and cheese tasting event hosted by Community Healthcare Foundation, is Friday, April 4, at Red Maple Country Club, 501 Golf Course Road, Suring. The Casino Night event includes unlimited tastings, hors d’oeuvres, raffle prizes, a silent auction and $500 in “casino cash” to play at gaming tables and slot machines. Barn quilts await spring weather
Thanks to the help of several volunteers this winter, the Barn Quilts of Oconto County project is ready for spring installations once the weather allows. To date, there are 23 blocks scheduled to be completed and installed by fall. Oconto Electric Cooperative will support this effort by donating its equipment.

Friends to close season with European-style music
Tickets are on sale for the Dorf Kapelle dinner and show, the final performance of the season for the Oconto Falls Friends of the Arts Fine Arts Series. The event begins at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 27, at Romy’s Holiday Inn, Kelly Lake. Dorf Kapelle celebrates its 25th season and continues to thrill audiences with the traditional ethnic style of the typical European village band.

Donald E. Schultz
Donald E. Schultz, 83, formerly of Gillett and Shawano, passed away on Thursday, March 20, 2014. Donald was born on Oct. 21, 1930, to the late Edward and Mary (Bricco) Schultz in New London. Dan graduated from Gillett High School and served in the United States Marine Corps.

Mildred ‘Milly’ Metzler
Mildred “Milly” Metzler, 90, Oconto Falls, died Thursday, March 27, 2014, at Sharpe Care. She was born Nov. 12, 1923, in Ladysmith to William and Edna (Elert) Helmrath. Because of her father’s work in the paper mill industry, Milly moved with her family many times including a move to Canada, before coming with her family to Oconto Falls as a junior in high school where she graduated with the Class of 1941.

Jeffrey A. Legner
Jeffrey A. Legner, 33, of Odell, Ill., died Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at 5:08 a.m. as a result of an auto accident on Interstate Highway 55 in rural Dwight, Ill. Jeff was born on May 30, 1980, in Pontiac, Ill., a son of Dennis and Vicki (Kridner) Legner. He married Heidi Boehlen on Aug. 5, 2006, at Oconto Falls.

Carl W. Brandt
Carl W. Brandt, 79, of Eagle River, passed away on Saturday, March 22, 2014, at Rennes Health and Rehab in Rhinelander. He was born on April 22, 1934, in Mauston to Charles and Kitty Brandt. Carl married Vivian Janik on Sept. 5, 1953, in Dubuque, Iowa. They resided in Milwaukee, later moving to Oconto Falls, where Carl was employed at Chadwick Manufacturing.

A very wise man, Henry Brooks Adams, once wrote “A teacher affects eternity: she (he) can never know where her (his) influence stops.” Every day for 24 years, I walked past a plaque at Wayland Academy that bore that inscription. I have never doubted its sagacity.

Tigers 18th at Point Invitational The Gillett Secondary School boys track team finished 18th Thursday at the Point Invitational in Stevens Point. Jacob Kasten finished fourth in the boys high jump with a 6-foot jump. He was the only Tigers athlete to finish in the top eight. Gillett finished in 18th place, tied with Bonduel, with five points. Appleton North (60), Stevens Point (59) and Seymour (56) took the top spots at the invite.
