Mildred “Milly” Metzler, 90, Oconto Falls, died Thursday, March 27, 2014, at Sharpe Care. She was born Nov. 12, 1923, in Ladysmith to William and Edna (Elert) Helmrath.
Because of her father’s work in the paper mill industry, Milly moved with her family many times including a move to Canada, before coming with her family to Oconto Falls as a junior in high school where she graduated with the Class of 1941. Following graduation from high school, she started to work as a legal secretary for Howard Eslien Sr.
On Jan. 31, 1948, she married Ralph Metzler, and together they owned and operated Metzler’s Sweet Shop, a candy and ice cream parlor in Oconto Falls. Milly was well known for her over 50-year career with the Eslien Law Offices, where she did bookkeeping and specialized in probate matters, and as Milly would say, “way before computers.”
She was a member of the Oconto Falls United Methodist Church and an avid bridge player, golfer and bowler in the community. Like many other couples in the Oconto Falls area, she and her husband, Ralph, helped in the construction of River Island Golf Club in the early 1960s.
Survivors are one sister, Erna Schlender, Green Bay; one sister-in-law, Marilyn Helmrath, Baltimore, Md., and Florida; one brother-in-law, Bob Metzler, Green Bay; the entire Eslien family; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph, in 1990; one brother, William Helmrath; three brothers-in-law, Roland Schlender, Clayton “Tony” and Harlan Metzler; and three sisters-in-law, Alice Metzler, Faye Metzler and Dolores Drafz.
Visitation was held Sunday, March 30, at Jones Funeral Service in Oconto Falls. Visitation continued Monday, March 31, at the Oconto Falls United Methodist Church until the time of the service. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. at the church with Pastor Jerry Cho officiating. Burial will take place alongside of her husband, Ralph, in Riverside Cemetery, Peshtigo.
