Chelberg wins at Valders Tournament

Jan. 11 Valders Tournament Shawano’s wrestlers captured a first place, three thirds and several other top 10s at Valders. Drew Chelberg won first place, with third place earned by Cash Panske, Kody Popelka and Marcus Brezgel. “Drew Chelberg wrestled very well today,” coach Mike Homan said.
Chargers win in final seconds
Jan. 10 Oconto Falls 68, Coleman 50 There was no stopping Jameson Beaman as the 6-3 junior owned the court in Oconto Falls 68-50 win over Coleman. Beaman scored 41 points, including eight 3-pointers and three free throws. He and Emerich Skarban each pulled down eight rebounds, and J.J. Pytleski had seven.
Shawano girls beat Everest
Jan. 11 Shawano 59, D.C. Everest 32 Coach Ryan Koenig said it was Hawks’ good team defense that led to its 59-32 non-conference win over D.C. Everest. Leah Nordin led Shawano with 23 points. Anna Dreier added another 10, as Shawano improved to 11-3. Bonduel 44, Xavier 41 Jan.
Antigo hockey team shuts out Shawano/Bonduel
Jan. 11 Antigo 5, Shawano/Bonduel 0 Shawano/Bonduel’s boys hockey team was no match for Eli Kassler and his teammates as Kassler scored all five goals in the Red Robins 5-0 shutout at the Langlade County Fairgrounds in Antigo. Kassler first scored at 10:35 in the first period with an assist by Owen Dickman. Ethan Novy and Dickman assisted on Kassler’s next goal at 15:43. In the second period, Kassler scored on his own at 12:01.
Shawano, Lena wrestlers win
Jan. 9 Shawano 47, Green Bay United 28 Shawano’s boys wrestlers battled through some adversity before defeating Green Bay United 47-28 at home. “We started six freshman due to illness and injury as we were down some of our starters,” coach Mike Homan said. “They stepped in and battled well.
Next Alice in Dairyland being sought
The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) is looking for individuals with a passion for promoting agriculture to apply for the position of 78th Alice in Dairyland through Jan. 31. As one of the most widely recognized marketing communications professionals in Wisconsin agriculture, Alice in Dairyland travels extensively, promoting Wisconsin’s agricultural industry and its impact on the state economy.
Jacobson sworn in as representative for the 87th Assembly District
On Jan. 6, state Rep. Brent Jacobson (R-Mosinee) was sworn into office at the official Inauguration Day ceremony at the State Capitol in Madison, beginning his term as the representative for the 87th Assembly District. “Public service is a great honor, and I am beyond humbled to have been elected by my constituents to serve as their voice in Madison,” Jacobson said.
Bruce G. Gillis
Bruce G. Gillis, 73, of Little Suamico, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2025. He was born on Feb. 18, 1951, in Oconto Falls to George and Mary (Rhode) Gillis. Bruce graduated from Oconto Falls High School in 1969 and married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Bednarik, on Oct. 18, 1969, in Spruce.
Darryl E. Greetan
Darryl Edward Greetan, 84, Oconto Falls, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2025, from complications due to Parkinson’s disease. He was born June 15, 1940, in Wabeno to John Sr. and Christine (Urbanek) Greetan. His childhood was spend in Wabeno and Lena, but he eventually moved to Oconto Falls and graduated from Oconto Falls High School, class of 1958. Darryl enlisted in the U.S. Army as a young man, serving in both Japan and Vietnam.
