Wisconsin farms that conduct their own pest management control practices need to be certified through the Pesticide Applicator Training (PAT) process to purchase or apply restricted-use-pesticides. The process for ordering the PAT manual and registering for a training/test session has undergone significant changes.
Veterans administration seeking valentines
The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) is asking for folks to help show veterans how much they appreciate their service and sacrifice by sending Valentine’s Day cards to veterans living in DVA facilities. “Last year, the residents at our Veteran Homes in Chippewa Falls, King and Union Grove were thrilled to receive Valentine’s Day wishes and thoughtful messages,” said DVA Secretary James Bond.
Wild game banquet back for 29th year
Hillside Assembly will be sponsoring its 29th annual Wild Game Banquet on Jan. 25 at Oconto Falls High School, 210 N. Farm Road, Oconto Falls. Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite dish to the potluck dinner at 5:30 p.m. with speaker Dean Hulce from “God’s Great Outdoors” at 6:30 p.m. The doors open at 4 p.m. Hulce is a lifetime hunter who has spent 35 years as a guide in Kodiak Island, Alaska, coastal Florida, Colorado and Texas.
Shawano County could see a new wheel tax
On the heels of a $40 annual wheel tax for Shawano residents, most Shawano County residents could soon find themselves facing a similar fee. Members of the Shawano County Highway and Parks Committee on Jan. 7 unanimously agreed to a $25 annual wheel tax on all vehicles weighing no more than 8,000 pounds. The vehicle registration fee was scheduled to be debated by the executive committee Jan. 15 and could go to the full county board Jan. 22.
ASPI auditioning for ‘The Play That Goes Wrong’
Abrams Spotlight Productions Inc. is looking for actors who enjoy making people laugh — without cracking up themselves. Mike Eserkaln, the artistic director of Comedy City in De Pere, will direct the ASPI spring comedy, “The Play That Goes Wrong.” Eserkaln understands comedy, and he’s looking for men and women, ages 16 and older, who love to make people laugh. Actors can audition anytime from 6-8 p.m. Jan. 28, or Jan.
Muriel 'Midge' J. Acra (nee Swanson)
A beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Muriel “Midge” J. Acra (nee Swanson) passed away Saturday, Jan. 4, 2025. She entered into her eternal life surrounded by her loving daughters. She was born in Chicago, on March 26, 1935, to her parents, Murrell and Beatrice Swanson. Especially close with her father, it was Murrell who fostered Midge’s love of school and learning, enrolling her at the Academy of Our Lady in Chicago.
Shawano-Menominee Circuit Court
• Travis L. Seifert, 26, Shawano, pleaded no contest July 10 to seven counts of felony bail jumping, and misdemeanor charges of two counts of battery, three counts of resisting or obstructing an officer, two counts of operating while revoked, and one count of disorderly conduct. Judge Katherine Sloma withheld sentencing Jan. 3 and placed him on four years of probation with conditions including six months in county jail. • Latasha J.
Generator failure at dam will cause water level issues
A generator failure at the Balsam Row Road Dam will cause unstable water levels north of the dam for the rest of the winter, according to the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department. “It should only impact the waterway north of the Balsam Row Road Dam, which is about 1.7 miles in our county,” said Lt. Chris Madle, also the county’s emergency management director. “They’re not worried about flooding or anything right now.
