Algae eater, ball python appear at SCHS

Shawano Community High School hosted an exotic pet surrender Jan. 11, organized by J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue (JRAAR) in collaboration with the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant/Water Resources Institutes, WAMSCO, and the Menominee County Conservation/Forestry/Zoning Department. This event marked the first of 29 planned for 2025. These events provide a judgment-free space for pet owners to surrender exotic animals they can no longer care for.

WIC sets regular visits at Encompass center

Competency exam delayed in fatal ATV crash
A status conference has been postponed until Feb. 17 in the case of a Gillett man who was arrested Oct. 28 in Arkansas after allegedly fleeing the scene of a fatal ATV accident in Oconto County. At the request of his defense attorney, a competency exam had been ordered for Obilio Tomas Sargento Roblero, 32, but the psychologist had trouble contacting the jail for an appointment, according to court documents.
Former treasurer accused of stealing $17K from Sportsman’s Club
The former treasurer of the Breed Sportsman’s Club was charged Jan. 9 with embezzling at least $17,000 from the club’s checking and savings accounts three years ago. Robin Renee Strehlow, 64, of Suring, was ordered to make an initial appearance before Oconto County Judge Jay Conley at 2 p.m. Feb.
Lena man dies in UTV crash
A 49-year-old man was killed Jan. 12 in a UTV crash in the Town of Lena. The Oconto County Sheriff’s Office said its Emergency Dispatch Center was notified around 2:50 p.m. of an accident involving a UTV with injuries on Goatsville Road east of Midway Road in the Town of Lena. A preliminary investigation indicated the vehicle, operated by the man from Lena, left the road and overturned in the north ditch.
Council approves street projects bid
Street projects for the city of Shawano could come in under budget in 2025 after the Shawano Common Council voted Jan. 8 to accept the bid from the David Tenor Corporation. The corporation was one of nine bidders for the project and agreed to do the work for $514,655.15. The city had budgeted $525,000 this year for street and utility reconstruction.
Man arrested in Wittenberg firearms incident
The Shawano County Sheriff’s Department arrested a man over the weekend who entered a home in Wittenberg with guns and caused a disturbance. On Jan. 11 at about 9:51 p.m., dispatchers received a 911 call reporting a man had entered a residence with two guns and caused a disturbance on Front Street. The man was believed to be intoxicated and after a brief struggle, fled into a nearby residence leaving one of the guns on scene.
Shawano Pathways plans winter hikes
The evening of Jan. 11 marked the first of five winter hikes organized by Shawano Pathways. Held at Maple Hill Recreation Area on Highway 22 south of Shawano, this first hike was a moonlight hike. The purpose of the winter hikes, other than just for fun and exercise, is also to get to know the local trails with a guide so hikers can then enjoy them anytime on their own. Future hikes are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Jan.
