A package you didn’t order could be a fun surprise, but be careful — especially if it comes with a QR code — as it might be the setup for a scam. In a “brushing” scam, you receive a package you didn’t order, often without a return address. This is often a setup by unscrupulous companies who found your address online.

Anglers are reminded the inland trout early catch-and-release season continues through May 2. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) noted that anglers can target any of Wisconsin’s inland trout species using artificial lures only, on designated early season trout streams. Any trout caught during this time will need to be immediately released.

Feb. 27 Bonduel 87, Weyauwega-Fremont 69 Bonduel finished the 2024-25 regular season a perfect 14-0 in the Central Wisconsin East Conference and 23-1 overall after defeating Weyauwega-Fremont 87-69. Ryan Westrich scored 25 points with 12 rebounds. Carter Moesch scored another 21 points including five 3-pointers.

Feb. 25 Tigerton 75, Crandon 62 Tigerton improved to 21-1 with its 75-62 win over Crandon. James Brady led the Tigers, recording a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Caleb Dahlstrom scored another 13 points, and Joey Zimdars and Sam Anheuser had 10 each. Brody Miller led the team with five assists, and Brady grabbed five steals.

Feb. 28 Bay Area 3, Fond du Lac Warbirds 1 The Ice Bears punched their ticket to the state tournament with a 3-1 win over the Fond du Lac Warbirds. A scoreless first period gave way to Bay Area’s three goals in the second period. Rachael Beeck scored at 1:28 with an Addison Gady assist. Faye Brunke scored at 2:34 with assists from Tiana Stindt and Emily Bill.

Feb. 25 Bay Area 6, Lakeshore Lightning 0 The Bay Area Ice Bears won their first WIAA playoff game, a 6-0 semifinal shutout of Lakeshore Lightning. The Ice Bears tallied 14 shots on goal in the first period, and the Lightning had seven, but neither team found the back of the net. Scoring began in the second period when the Ice Bears connected on three of their 13 shots on goal. Abby Monmaerts scored at 1:05 with a Rachael Beeck assist.

Fresh off winning the Central Wisconsin Conference East title, having fun and the love of the sport seems to be the secret to the success of the Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School girls basketball team. With an impressive 14-0 conference mark, coach Nick Mechelke is looking forward to seeing how far this team will go. “Our biggest strength is our defense and the pressure that we put on that teams have a hard time dealing with,” Mechelke said.

The next American Legion Gunless Poultry Shoot will take place at 1 p.m. March 22 at Rusty’s Bowl, 4489 N. Branch St., Wabeno. The American Legion Sylvan Post 44 of Wabeno will be raffling off packages of meat, poultry, sausages, bacon, beverages and items donated by local businesses. There will also be 50/50 and basket raffles. The Legion is composed of veterans who are committed to helping veterans, their families and the community.

Jack Falk, a sophomore from Pulaski, placed second in the WIAA state wrestling meet’s Division 1 106-pound weight class. In the title match, he lost to Union Grove’s Camden Rugg. Three Oconto Falls wrestlers finished either second or third. Senior Nick Trepanier finished second in the D2 175-pound weight class. In the title match, he lost 16-2 to Micah Kuchta of Coleman. Oconto Falls sophomore Isaiah Holtz placed third in the 113 class in D2.
