The Gillett Secondary School football team made an immediate statement Friday with a 62-0 season-opening nonconference victory at White Lake/Elcho. The Tigers were propelled by 42 first-quarter points, including three touchdowns by leading rusher Monte Noffke and two by Akeem Bates. Gillett coach Rick Kamps said Noffke picked up where he left off last season and ran the ball very well.

Michael Robert “Battles” Bartelt, 48, of Shawano, passed away Friday, Aug. 22, 2014, in Shawano. Michael was born on Nov. 17, 1965, the son of the late Robert Bartelt and Marva (Knope) Wege. He was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Battles owned and operated The Shack in Shawano and Shooters in Embarrass. In his younger years he played baseball and softball.

Marijean Rice Walker passed away on Aug. 4, 2014, a few weeks after her 83rd birthday. Mari was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She will be remembered in every pretty pink flower, in the sparkle of a child’s eye and in the beauty of sunset on the lake. Raised with a loving, lively family in La Crosse, Mari was the eldest of seven children born to Robert and Elizabeth Rice.

Craig “AJ” N. Kjendalen, 57, of Marion, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, Aug. 25, 2014, in Summerfield, Florida. AJ was born on June 3, 1957, in Clintonville, the son of Lois (Butcher) Miller and the late Norman Kjendalen. In 1975 he graduated from Marion High School. He had worked at Fort Howard Paper, Green Bay, Choice Beer Sales, Shawano, H.O.

Full House Realty in Shawano has received a Shawano Country Vision 2017 interior improvement grant totaling $5,000. The grant was awarded to owner Jenny Ballwahn to help cover costs to renovate a vacant commercial building at 204 S. Main St. in downtown Shawano. Renovations included new flooring, lighting, ceiling tiles, paint and electrical. “The building was in need of lots of love.

Plans have been finalized for the second annual Bike the Barn Quilts family fun ride. Sponsored by Shawano Pathways, the recreational scenic bicycle ride through Shawano County will be held Sept. 27. It is geared for all ages and skill levels. The rides will consist of routes varying in distance from 5 to 70 miles. Each ride showcases some of the county’s 270-plus barn quilts against a backdrop of fall colors.

The Shawano Lobos baseball team had to come from behind to win the 2014 Dairyland Grand Championship 7-6 over Hofa Park on Sunday in Hofa Park. Bryce Szymanski hit a triple and TJ Arrowood had a two-run home run to give the Lobos an early lead, but Hofa Park answered with a pair of doubles and a home run by Adam Frost in the bottom of the first frame.
