Dowden named CWC-8 player of the year

Bonduel High School senior middle hitter Jen Dowden led the list of Central Wisconsin Conference honorees announced this week, making the first team unanimously and being selected as the CWC-8 player of the year. Dowden was joined on the all-conference volleyball team by fellow senior Lexi Reinke, who was a second-team selection.
Dunnam named first team for All-Bay Conference
Shawano Community High School junior Erika Dunnam and senior Zack Sousek led the Hawks’ in Bay Conference honors announced this week. Dunnam, a middle hitter, earned a first-team all-conference selection. Senior middle hitter Tori Wiskow and junior setter Annelies Young earned honorable mentions. BHS boys fall 1 point short of state trip
The Bonduel High School boys cross-country team finished one point away from a WIAA Division 3 sectional championship Saturday, instead finishing third and qualifying only one runner for the state meet—senior Sam Falck. “We had four seniors on the team this year, and it’s my last year coaching,” Bonduel coach Jim Watry said. “We kind of hoped to end on a real high note. Bears upset in regional final
The top-seeded Bonduel High School volleyball team pushed its WIAA Division 3 regional final to a fifth-game tiebreaker Saturday before falling to No. 3 Oconto in Bonduel. Though Bonduel (18-13) had the top seed and experienced players in 6-foot senior middle hitter Jen Dowden and 5-10 senior outside hitter Lexi Reinke, the Blue Devils came in confident, knowing they beat the Bears 3-2 Oct.
Coach proud of SCHS runners
Shawano Community High School cross-country coach Steve Stomberg had plenty to be proud of in his teams’ showing at Saturday’s WIAA Division 1 sectional. Edna C. Rusch
Edna C. Rusch, 98, Oconto Falls, died peacefully Sunday morning, Oct. 26, 2014, at Sharpe Care. She was born Jan. 25, 1916, at the family home near Pulcifer to Frank and Elsie (Strei) Zastrow. Edna grew up in Pulcifer, where she attended school and enjoyed being a good student. On Dec. 14, 1932, she married Walter O. Rusch in Gillett.
Mystery author to visit Gillett
The Gillett Public Library will host Genevieve Davis, author of “Secret Life, Secret Death,” for an author talk at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1. “Secret Life, Secret Death” is a nonfiction mystery in which Davis unravels the true story of a young mother who fell into crime in Chicago in the Roaring ’20s and later ran a shady hotel in Wisconsin during the Depression.
Rural-Urban banquet honors volunteers
In 1962, Oconto County joined other counties in Wisconsin in honoring people who had provided many years of volunteer service in their communities. Honorees were required to be at least 70 years old and live a good portion of their lives in Oconto County. When the program was first initiated, people were honored from the urban area one year and from the rural area next.
Anthony John Otradovec
Anthony John Otradovec, 420 Adams St., Oconto, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2014, at Rennes Health Center in Peshtigo. He was born Dec. 27, 1936, in Black Creek. He married Corrine Schneider on June 5, 1971, in Gillett. She preceded him in death in 2011. He is survived by two brothers, Myron, of Pound, and Mark, of Green Bay. Friends called from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Saturday at Kuehl Funeral Home in Gillett. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m.
