Dean E. Lieg, 78, of Shawano, passed away unexpectedly Thursday morning, May 21, 2015, at the Appleton Medical Center in Appleton. Dean was born June 15, 1936, in Milwaukee, a son of the late Edmund and Floy (Owens) Lieg. He attended St. Rose Catholic School in Milwaukee. He later entered the United States Army and served his country from 1952 until 1955. He was stationed in Korea. Upon returning from service, he was employed at the E.R.

Lois Jean “Roz” Rosnow Rupple: A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 5, 2015, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano with the Rev. Luke Ferris officiating. Entombment will be in the Sacred Heart Mausoleum. Visitation will be held on Friday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Roger Frank Bartnik, 79, passed away on Saturday, May 23, 2015, at his home in Shawano. Roger was born in Milwaukee on Jan. 30, 1936, to the late Frank and Evelyn (Pozceczek) Bartnik. Roger married Phyllis Fiedorowicz and together they had two children, Kristina and Kirk.

Leon E. Riemer, 90, of Gillett, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 24, 2015, following a long illness. Leon was born in the Township of Green Valley on Jan. 31, 1925, to the late Emil and Bertha (Lemke) Riemer. Leon attended schools in Pulcifer and Cecil before graduating from Shawano High School in 1943. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise in the South Pacific during World War II.

Shawano Police Department May 28 Police logged 25 incidents, including the following: Suspicious — Police responded to a suspicious vehicle complaint in the 1200 block of East Green Bay Street. Theft — Police responded to a theft complaint at Taco Bell, 1266 E.

The Shawano County Emergency Food and Shelter Board has been awarded federal funds through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security/Federal Emergency Management Agency. The county has been awarded $7,872 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs. A local board will determine how the funds awarded to Shawano County are to be distributed. The local board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive the funds.

The Shawano County Humane Society will launch its second annual Cat Adopt-a-Thon on Monday in hopes of finding good homes for a growing feline population. The society inaugurated the event last year when more than 100 cats were awaiting adoption in a shelter with 72 cages. The situation is not quite so catastrophic this year, but it’s still early, according to the society’s assistant director, Shelly Hansen. “It’s kitten season,” she said.

Valedictorian Cole Huntington urged his 165 classmates to persevere through challenges in his commencement speech Friday at Shawano Community High School. Using his experiences in the classroom and in athletics to illustrate his message, Huntington said being benched turned into a learning experience. “Get back up, because that is what life is about,” he said.

On May 19, a young member of the Shawano Speedway racing family passed away. Seth Henry was a great friend to many racers, as well as a go-kart racer, ice racer and enduro racer himself. Seth was a fine young man liked by many. His racing roots run deep.
