Running water has been restored to North Bayshore Park, a county park and campground in Little River, following the replacement of a pressure tank for the park’s well. Corrosion at the well caused the county to shut off the supply of running water at the park, 500 Bay Road, in late May.

N.E.W. Credit Union recently announced the 2015 recipients of its Method Vizelka Memorial Scholarship. Vizelka was a 12-year volunteer on the credit union’s board of directors and a firm believer in the power of education. Every year the credit union makes available a $200 scholarship in his memory to a graduating senior from each of the five Oconto County high schools.

Carol Kopp, Oconto County Jail administrator, will graduate June 5 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Wisconsin Law Enforcement Command College, a partnership between the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Wisconsin Department of Justice. The Command College trains representatives from law enforcement agencies around the state, preparing them for leadership roles.

The Oconto Falls City Council, ready to select contractors on Monday for a $310,000 street construction project, instead postponed a vote amid claims it was proceeding illegally. After consulting with legal counsel on Tuesday morning, city officials determined the process used to obtain the quotes was acceptable, as long as no negotiation occurred after the quotes were reviewed. State Highway 22 construction in the city of Oconto Falls reached a one-month milestone last week, and crews are deep into the first phase of a two-phase project scheduled to end Oct. 31. “We’re trying to do the best we can with the weather conditions we have,” said Duke Peters at an information meeting Friday.

As many of my readers know, I grew up on a farm in northeastern Wisconsin. And as many people who grew up on farms know, a big part of farming is a battle against weeds. In Wisconsin, there are probably six or seven dozen indigenous varieties of weeds, and I’m pretty sure most of them grew on our farm. At least that’s how it seemed. Dad was on constant alert for the encroachment of weeds in our fields.

The end of the school year is always emotional, and this particular school year’s end along the path around the Falls carries more significance than the 36 others I brought to a close as a school superintendent. Sunday was a great day for a graduation. “We came together as strangers, but leave as eternal friends.” The class motto always says something about the class. For some, the coming together was at kindergarten.

Fifteen students from Gillett High School will take a trip to Costa Rica in mid-June 2016. To raise funds for the trip, the students will hold a rummage and bake sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 4-6 at the Town of Gillett Fire Station, 10908 Town Hall Road, Gillett. The sale coincides with Gillett’s citywide rummage sale. Items for sale include a double stroller, kid’s bike, toddler bed and clothing.
