Mystery flusher forces system upgrade

The city of Shawano will spend about $11,000 to upgrade the lift station pumps at the River Pines subdivision because someone there has apparently been flushing items down the toilet that the system can’t handle, according to city officials. Public Works Coordinator Eddie Sheppard said the system has been getting clogged by heavy-duty paper towels. City could issue bonds for Woodport Doors expansion
The city of Shawano could make use of a rare financing arrangement to issue bonds on behalf of a local manufacturer that would benefit from the city’s access to tax-exempt, low-interest borrowing. The Shawano Common Council on Wednesday unanimously approved an initial resolution calling for the city to issue up to $7 million worth of bonds on behalf of Woodport Doors, LLC. Shawano Police Department July 8 Police logged 27 incidents, including the following: OWI — A 28-year-old Shawano woman was arrested for operating while intoxicated at Main and Sawyer streets. Disturbance — A 28-year-old Shawano man was taken into custody on a probation and parole hold after a disturbance in the 400 block of South Smalley Street. OWL — A 20-year-old man was cited for operating without a license at Elizabeth and Prospect streets.

Marianne M. Phalen
Marianne M. Phalen, 87, of Shawano passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family early Thursday morning, July 9, 2015, following a courageous battle with cancer. Marianne was born on Aug. 28, 1927, in the town of Wescott, Shawano County, a daughter of the late Stefan and Ludvica (Hunya) Greguska. She attended St. Joseph’s Catholic Grade in Keshena through eighth grade. She later attended Shawano High School, graduating in 1946.

Majeski gives back to area go-kart racers
Stock car racer Ty Majeski has been leaving his competition in the dust since he was a youngster. Now he is giving back to the community where it all started. Majeski, 20, of Seymour, has started a driver development program for go-kart drivers, ages 8-12, at Gold Star Raceway in Clintonville. After being around the drivers for several weeks, Majeski recently selected six applicants from a list of 15 to 20 to participate in the program.

Youth baseball, softball tourneys kick off today
The future of Shawano baseball and softball will take to the diamonds of Memorial Field over the next three weekends. Eighty-four teams, with players ranging in age from 8-12, will participate in the Shawano Youth League tourneys. Man sought in gun incident outside Belle Plaine bar
Authorities were seeking a male suspect they believe fired a round from a 9 mm handgun during an apparent drug deal gone bad in Belle Plaine early Thursday. Beautiful gardens support good cause
The Safe Haven Garden Walk is back for its 14th year Saturday with four gardens. “The four participating gardens are beautiful and will make for a great day of strolling,” said Stacey Cicero, executive director of Safe Haven, an emergency shelter for victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault.
