The Shawano Ski Sharks came away with a trifecta at the 49th annual Wisconsin State Water Ski Show Championships in Wisconsin Rapids last week. Dave Passehl was named the most outstanding male skier, Cody Siolka took second in the freestyle jump and the Ski Sharks placed third in the Division 3 team competition off Red Beach on Lake Wazeecha. “When they called my name, I was shocked,” Passehl said.

Pearl Court Park will remain intact after the Shawano Plan Commission scotched a proposal Thursday to split the park in two and sell off about half of it for residential development. Angela Kort, a neighbor of the small waterfront park at Pearl Court north of Fairview Way, presented the commission with copies of the park deed, state statutes and other documents in defense of keeping it a park property. Merete Arvik came to a Girl Scout camp in Amber in 1979, at age 17, to work as a counselor through an exchange program in her native Norway. She stayed with four different families, the last one being Jerre and Ginny Cummings in Shawano.

Hot weather and hot action greeted race fans Saturday at Shawano Speedway. In one of the hotly contested features, Mitch McGrath made a late pass to win his first Late Model feature at the speedway. Brett Swedberg led much of the race before making contact with Jared Siefert, who had spun, on lap 17. Tom Naeyaert passed Swedberg as the race went back to green on lap 18. A caution on lap 23 set up a two-lap dash to the finish.

After cruising through pool play, Shawano’s 11U baseball squad came up short in the Shawano Youth League tournament championship Sunday, losing 12-9 to Kimberly. In other SYL finals Sunday, Seymour claimed the boys 12U tourney title and Kaukauna won the girls 8U softball crown. Dorothy “Dot” Arlene Odden, 79, of Shawano, formerly of Kindred, North Dakota, went to her home in Heaven on July 18, 2015, after over seven months of dealing with surgeries and many complications. She passed away in her home surrounded by family and friends. Dot was born April 20, 1936, in Wahpeton, North Dakota, to Emil and Dagney (Elness) Odden.

Frederick J. “Jack” Hohn, 82, Birnamwood, died Saturday, July 18, 2015, at UW Hospital, Madison. He was born on Dec. 8, 1932, in Red River, the son of the late Ernest and Mildred (Thorne) Hohn. On Jan. 2, 1954, Frederick was united in marriage to Suzanne Westfahl in the town of Grant. She survives. Frederick worked as a food inspector for the U.S. Department of Agriculture for over 50 years.
