Police seek suspect in fatal hit-and-run
Police in the Menominee Indian Tribe reservation are searching for a motorist they believe struck and killed a pedestrian and then fled the scene. David Hawpetoss, 48, was found wounded along the road about 4:15 a.m. Saturday on Old South Branch Road north of Keshena. Hawpetoss, a tribal member who lived in Gresham, was pronounced dead at the scene. Tribal Police Chief Mark K. Waukau Sr.

It was a warm and muggy night Saturday as the Shawano Speedway welcomed two new members to its Hall of Fame. With hundreds of friends and family in attendance, JJ Smith and Chuck Buckbee were inducted into the hall.

Letter: Walker is only one in state moving forward
To the editor: As (Gov. Scott) Walker campaigns across the country, remember the actions he has taken in Wisconsin. The promised jobs never materialized, nor the new businesses. The prevailing wage is gone, a day of rest is gone, and he thinks minimum wage is a waste. Our middle class is shrinking faster than any other state’s.

New zoning/building official knows trade, community
The city of Shawano recently welcomed Brian Bunke to our staff. He will serve as the city’s zoning administrator/building inspector. Today’s column will help you get acquainted with Brian and some of the duties his new position includes. Bunke left his position as building inspector for the city of Kiel (a position he held since May 2005) to join our city team.

Wheelchair provides different perspective on life
One thing I learned during my stint in a wheelchair these past few weeks is a different perspective on things. I saw dirt in areas that I had thought were clean. Take the ice and water dispenser on the freezer part of the refrigerator, for example.

Calf in the cornfield
In the midst of the busy harvest season on the farm, we have cows freshening left and right. Normally things go well. Occasionally, we have a cow with issues, but for the most part, the newborn pops out, the momma takes over, we retrieve the little one from the cow pasture and we all carry on. Once in a while things, don’t go as planned. One morning a cow didn’t come in with the herd.
