Bernadine (Eschner) Kappes
Known to many as Nitzie, Bernadine Kappes passed away on July 26, 2025. She was 95 years old and was born to Ben and Anna Eschner in Gillett on Dec. 6, 1929. She grew up during the era of the Great Depression and World War II. While living in and around Gillett, she attended Gillett High School. She was active in the band and was the drum majorette. Because many men were away to the war, she worked on the farms with her father.
Wisconsin DNR firefighters head to western U.S., Canada to assist with wildfire suppression efforts
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources said Fire Control program staff have been mobilized across the western United States and Canada to combat increased wildfire activity and assist in suppression and protection efforts. Wisconsin has been busy mobilizing resources, including personnel and engines, to more than 65 out-of-state fire assignments so far in 2025.
Textbook approval becomes controversial
What should have been a simple approval of textbooks and curriculum for world languages July 28 turned into a tense 20-minute discussion about making sure teachers have enough materials to work with in the classrooms. The Shawano School Board approved spending $65.361.16 to purchase French and Spanish textbooks from Vista Higher Learning to be used over the next six years at Shawano Community High School.
Police provide details on city curfew
Shawano police have recently received several inquiries regarding the city’s curfew, with complaints coming in about teenagers being out after dark. The current law notes that individuals ages 14-17 are not to be on city streets, alleys or other public places from 10 p.m. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday to 6 a.m. the next day, and from midnight Friday and Saturday to 6 a.m.
