W-B football program receives grant from Green Bay Packers

A local youth football program is one of 20 from around Wisconsin to receive a $1,000 grant from the Green Bay Packers.

Wittenberg-Birnamwood Area Youth Football recently received a Packers Youth Football Matching Grant, which supports equipment purchases, new uniforms and football facility improvements.

Fredy brothers face each other in football opener

Mark Fredy looked across the field and saw a familiar face.

The first-year coach of the Marion/Tigerton faced his brother, Bob, who is in his first season of coaching Iola-Scandinavia’s varsity team.

The two teams met Aug. 20 in the season opener for both programs, as Mark Fredy’s Thundercatz met Bob Fredy’s Thunderbirds in a nonconference matchup of 8-player teams. Iola-Scandinavia won 34-8.

Stangler wins all 3 matches for Pulaski

Monday, Aug. 24

Pulaski No. 3 singles player Alana Stangler won all three tennis matches when the Red Raiders played at Wausau West.

The Red Raiders defeated Green Bay Preble 6-1, then lost 6-1 to D.C. Everest and 5-2 to Wausau West.

Shawano lost all three matches – 6-1 to Wausau East and 7-0 to Stevens Point and Wausau West.

Wolf leads area golfers on Seymour course

Shawano golfers placed second while Bonduel finished fifth among five teams at Crystal Springs Golf Course in Seymour.

The Hawks tallied 216, and Bonduel had 254. Despite the last-place team showing, Bonduel senior Paige Wolf’s 49 was the sixth best on the day.

Panthers’ offense wakes up after lightning delays

After coming up empty on its first drive, it was back to the drawing board for the Oconto Falls football team.

The Panthers headed to Waupaca on Aug. 21 for a nonconference matchup with the Comets, a team Oconto Falls hadn’t faced since both programs competed years ago in the Valley 8 Conference.

AJ Springborn, Nolan win at Speedway

Shawano’s AJ Springborn jumped up from a ninth-place starting position to take the checkered flag in the 20-lap sport modifieds feature race Aug. 22 at the Shawano Speedway.

He edge out Oconto Falls’ Cole Magnin, who started in 10th and placed second, as well as Seymour’s Tim Jorgenson, who started 11th and finished third.

Pole sitter Andrew Engels, of Oconto Falls, finished in 10th place.

Broncos to play for Dairyland Grand Championship

The matchup for this year’s Dairyland League Grand Championship baseball game is set, while there’s still one more round of playoffs for the Badger Amateur Baseball Association.

Bonduel will host Hortonville in the Dairyland championship game at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 30.
